Worst2First:
My Most Anticipated Films of Winter 2019-2020
As the decade draws to a close and a new one begins, there's no shortage of exciting films hitting theaters. December, January and February have some exciting offers, and it looks to be a great way to warm up from the outside chill.

Here are the ten films I'm most excited to see this winter, worst2first...

**DATES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE**

Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous
Emancipation of One Harley Quinn
February 7
The DCEU is really looking for something to grab hold and claim as a victory, and recently they haven't had much success in that department, especially the much maligned (yet somehow Oscar winning) "Suicide Squad," whose only valuable asset was Margot Robbie's beloved Harley Quinn.  So of course she gets her own spinoff film, and I'm cautiously optimistic about it.  The trailer looks bonkers (much like Harley herself), as she splits from the Joker and forms an all-female team to rescue a young girl from the hands of Ewan McGregor's Black Mask.  The film features other comic heroes including Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya, and it looks like it'll be a very Harley-centric film, but it could be fun due to Robbie's pure energy.

 Jumanji: The Next Level
December 13
Two years ago, "Jumanji" hit theaters and I didn't see it until it came out on home video, because I thought it'd be a terrible cash-grab idea to milk off the beloved classic, but I actually found myself entertained by it.  Now there's the sequel, and once again I'm not looking too forward to it, because it looks like it'll be a re-hashing of the previous.  All four stars return, but this time the people playing their characters are different, so it looks like it'll be another introduction movie as Danny Glover and Danny DeVito get to play the video game in Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson's bodies, and the typical jokes will continue.  Still, it could be good, as I was proven wrong before.

#8
 Underwater
January 10
Kristen Stewart is a very polarizing actress - either you love her or hate her, and most people remember her awful performances in the "Twilight" series, but she's had real success in the independent film circuit.  Now she takes on horror in "Underwater," where she's a part of a crew of researchers who live miles underwater and come upon something deadly in the deep.  This reminds me of films like "The Abyss," but having a PG-13 rating may hurt it - but still I'm always up for a deep sea horror adventure.

#7
 Bad Boys for Life
January 17
Michael Bay's "Bad Boys" films were lucrative successes, and featured the inspired pairing of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, but the last film came out in 2002.  Decades the final film in the trilogy sat in production limbo, but now - eighteen years later - we're finally getting the conclusion we've been looking for.  Will Smith looks as good as ever, while Martin Lawrence seems to got confused and thought he was filming "Big Momma's House 4," but I'm still somewhat optimistic for this outing, even though sequels set decades after its predecessor rarely succeeds.  Still, it looks like a fun, action-packed thrill ride with two naturally charismatic leads, so I'm looking forward to it.

#6
 Cats
December 20
Based off the long-running and acclaimed Broadway musical, "Cats" features an all-star cast including Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, James Cordon, Judi Dench, Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, as well as newcomer Francesca Hayward as a gang of cats known as Jellicles who participate in a ritual to find which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer.  It's about as crazy as it sounds, and the film looks absolutely stunning yet also super strange, with the makeup, costume designs and effects make the characters look like such an odd blend of human and cat, but I'm still hyped to see it due to the fantastic cast, memorable songs, and the uniqueness of it all.

#5
 The King's Man
February 14
Matthew Vaughn's "Kingsman" films have been wildly successful due to their blend of intense action, dry humor, and solid storytelling - plus the combination of Taron Egerton and Colin Firth.  Now the film series goes back to its roots to show how the Kingsman company was founded, as two men must stop a group of evildoers from taking over the world.  Ralph Fiennes takes on Colin Firth's elder role, while Harris Dickinson plays his protege as they embark on another exciting, fast-paced adventure in the franchise - plus the addition of one of history's most terrifying characters in Raputin.

#4
 1917
December 25
There isn't a lot of films that take place during World War I, but "Skyfall" director Sam Mendes decided to spotlight this war in "1917," a film that focuses on two young soldiers who are tasked with the impossible - deliver a message warning of an ambush before thousands of soldiers are killed.  The film is directed by Mendes and also includes Oscar-winner Roger Deakins' cinematography, and is unique in that it was edited to make it seem like one long continuous take as we see these two young men embark on their duty.  It looks absolutely stunning and will undoubtedly be filled with great action and suspense.

#3
 Bombshell
December 13
Based off the real-life scandal that almost crippled Fox News, "Bombshell" tells the story of Gretchen Carlson, who stood up against Fox News CEO Roger Ailes and sued him for sexual harassment, which led to other women in the network coming forward as well, including Megyn Kelly.  The film features some of the best actors in the business including Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron (who literally looks exactly like Megyn Kelly), Margot Robbie, John Lithgow, Kate McKinnon, Connie Britton, Malcolm McDowell and Allison Janney, and looks to show the seedy underbelly of corruption within the network.

#2
 Little Women
December 25
Louisa May Alcott's beloved novel has seen the big screen treatment time and again, the most notable one being in 1994, but it looks like 2019's "Little Women" will be the new standard for the novel, as it boasts an amazing cast that will undoubtedly deliver awards-worthy performances.  The film focuses on the four March sisters in the 1860s as they struggle through hopes, dreams, and the pressures of marriage, all told through the eyes of rebellious Jo, who doesn't want to conform to the narrative.  "Lady Bird" director Greta Gerwig (who also received an Oscar nomination) returns behind the camera, along with her stars Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet, along with acclaimed actresses Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Laura Dern, and Meryl Streep, and looks to be the awards contender of the year.

#1
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
December 20
The saga finally comes to an end, and it will undoubtedly be one of the year's biggest films. The Sith and Jedi meet for one last time, cementing the Skywalker saga and easily will be a film filled with wild, action-packed action and tremendous performances by its stellar cast.  How will it all end?  Fans are more than excited to see how it will all turn out, and how this long-running franchise will finally conclude.
