Major Theatrical Releases December 2019
As the decade comes to a close, there's a good group of films that will lead out the 2010s in style. Here are the major films being released December 2019...
**THERE WILL BE NO SPOILERS**
**DATES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE**
Playmobil: The Movie
December 6
This "LEGO Movie" wannabe will easily be 2019's last box office bomb, a film that's been pushed back time and again, and looks to be just a cheap copy of the fantastic "LEGO Movie" franchise. The animation looks horrible, the story timid, and I have no clue how they managed to get some of these A-list actors to lend their voices to this abomination.
Black Christmas
December 13
The original "Black Christmas" is a classic, a horror film that introduced the slasher film as we know it today, giving birth to cinema's most prolific horror villains like Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees. 2006 saw a "Black Christmas" remake, which pretty much spit on everything that made the original so special, and I thought nothing would be as bad as that. However, it seems that the 2019 re-remake of "Black Christmas" wants me to "hold her beer" in that department, as it looks like almost nothing of the original is left intact, but rather now it follows a group of sorority girls who stand together against a sinister cult of male co-eds who wish to kill them - or something.
Bombshell
December 13
Based
off the real-life scandal that almost crippled Fox News, "Bombshell"
tells the story of Gretchen Carlson, who stood up against Fox News CEO
Roger Ailes and sued him for sexual harassment, which led to other women
in the network coming forward as well, including Megyn Kelly. The film
features some of the best actors in the business including Nicole
Kidman, Charlize Theron (who literally looks exactly like Megyn Kelly),
Margot Robbie, John Lithgow, Kate McKinnon, Connie Britton, Malcolm
McDowell and Allison Janney, and looks to show the seedy underbelly of
corruption within the network.
Jumanji: The Next Level
December 13
Two
years ago, "Jumanji" hit theaters and I didn't see it until it came out
on home video, because I thought it'd be a terrible cash-grab idea to
milk off the beloved classic, but I actually found myself entertained by
it. Now there's the sequel, and once again I'm not looking too forward
to it, because it looks like it'll be a re-hashing of the previous.
All four stars return, but this time the people playing their characters
are different, so it looks like it'll be another introduction movie as
Danny Glover and Danny DeVito get to play the video game in Kevin Hart
and Dwayne Johnson's bodies, and the typical jokes will continue.
Still, it could be good, as I was proven wrong before.
Richard Jewell
December 13
Clint Eastwood has decided to tell the stories of real-life heroes of the modern era, with some success. Last year's "15:17 to Paris" would've fared better if he didn't cast the actual heroes to play themselves (although it was a nice thing to do), and now he's telling the story of Richard Jewell, an overweight security guard who discovers a bomb at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta during the 1996 Olympics and prevented a national disaster. However, both the FBI and media focused on Jewell as the suspect, sending his life into turmoil just for doing the right thing. Held by a strong supporting cast including Sam Rockwell, Jon Hamm, and Kathy Bates, the film looks to be a suspenseful dramatic film featuring relative newcomer Paul Walter Hauser as the title character.
Cats
December 20
Based
off the long-running and acclaimed Broadway musical, "Cats" features an
all-star cast including Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, James Cordon,
Judi Dench, Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, as well as newcomer
Francesca Hayward as a gang of cats known as Jellicles who participate
in a ritual to find which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer. It's
about as crazy as it sounds, and the film looks absolutely stunning yet
also super strange, with the makeup, costume designs and effects make
the characters look like such an odd blend of human and cat, but I'm
still hyped to see it due to the fantastic cast, memorable songs, and
the uniqueness of it all.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
December 20
The
saga finally comes to an end, and it will undoubtedly be one of the
year's biggest films. The Sith and Jedi meet for one last time,
cementing the Skywalker saga and easily will be a film filled with wild,
action-packed action and tremendous performances by its stellar cast.
How will it all end? Fans are more than excited to see how it will all
turn out, and how this long-running franchise will finally conclude.
1917
December 25
There
isn't a lot of films that take place during World War I, but "Skyfall"
director Sam Mendes decided to spotlight this war in "1917," a film that
focuses on two young soldiers who are tasked with the impossible -
deliver a message warning of an ambush before thousands of soldiers are
killed. The film is directed by Mendes and also includes Oscar-winner
Roger Deakins' cinematography, and is unique in that it was edited to
make it seem like one long continuous take as we see these two young men
embark on their duty. It looks absolutely stunning and will
undoubtedly be filled with great action and suspense.
Little Women
December 25
Louisa
May Alcott's beloved novel has seen the big screen treatment time and
again, the most notable one being in 1994, but it looks like 2019's
"Little Women" will be the new standard for the novel, as it boasts an
amazing cast that will undoubtedly deliver awards-worthy performances.
The film focuses on the four March sisters in the 1860s as they struggle
through hopes, dreams, and the pressures of marriage, all told through
the eyes of rebellious Jo, who doesn't want to conform to the
narrative. "Lady Bird" director Greta Gerwig (who also received an
Oscar nomination) returns behind the camera, along with her stars
Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet, along with acclaimed actresses Emma
Watson, Florence Pugh, Laura Dern, and Meryl Streep, and looks to be
the awards contender of the year.
Spies in Disguise
December 25
Will Smith and Tom Holland lend their voices to this seemingly lackluster spy animated film. When the world's best super spy is accidentally turned into a pigeon due to his scientist's error, Lance Sterling must find a way to stop a madman from taking over the world while being such a small animal. The premise seems ridiculous, and the animation looks like something that would've worked in the early 2010s, but still the presence of Smith and Holland could make it better than my lackluster hopes would be.
There are the major films coming out in December 2019, and here's the order in which I'm most excited to see them, from the least to the most:
#10 - Playmobil: The Movie
#9 - Spies in Disguise
#9 - Spies in Disguise
#8 - Black Christmas
#7 - Richard Jewell
#6 - Jumanji: The Next Level
#5 - Cats
#4 - 1917
#3 - Bombshell
#2 - Little Women
#1 - Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
