Hot Pursuit

Hot Pursuit
Starring Reese Witherspoon, Sofia Vergara, Matthew del Negro, Michael Mosley
Directed by Anne Fletcher

The Story:
Cooper (Reese Witherspoon) grew up with her cop father, and desired to follow in his footsteps.  She somewhat achieves this goal by becoming a cop, but kept confined to the evidence office.

Then she gets the chance of a lifetime - to protect Daniella Riva (Sofia Vergara), the wife of a cartel informant who is about to testify against the powerful cartel leader Cortez (Joaquin Cosio).  Things go terribly array, forcing Cooper and Daniella to go on the run, not just from vengeful cartel assassins, but also from crooked cops inside Cooper's own precinct.  Together, the mismatched pair must learn to work together in order to survive.

The Synopsis:
Where to begin, where to begin.  I've heard nothing but negative reviews from everyone about this film, so it wasn't anywhere high on my list to see, but I finally made some free time to see it, and now I wish for that time back to do something more meaningful, like cut my toenails.

At a scant 87 minutes, it's about 87 minutes too long.  The story is something that a six year old could write on their worst day.  Cooper, a by-the-books southern girl who is incredibly socially awkward and very short (as it is mentioned several...several...times throughout), must protect Daniella, an incredibly wealthy super tall yet not very old looking (although it is mentioned, again, SEVERAL times how she resembles a 50 year old, when she resembles nothing of the sort) woman who uses her sexuality to get what she wants.

What a pair!  Of course they'll be the best of buddies and everything will be hunky dory.  Only not.  Because these two constantly fight among one another which leads to several negative repercussions, although, since it's a comedy, these repercussions are humorous - or at least that's what they want the viewers to believe.

Instead of something endearing and hilarious, we get something so disjointed and hackneyed that any laughs given were forced, and the incredible talents of Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon and several time Golden Globe nominee Sofia Vergara were wasted, and I wonder why either talented woman agreed to take part in this abomination.

So, in case you couldn't tell, the movie was a dud on every level.  It's like watching one of the classic cop buddy movies from the 80s - except at least those were funny.

The Summary:
Unfunny, boring, and filled with cliches and one-note hits, "Hot Pursuit" will leave you running out of the theater.

The Score: C-
