Worst2First: My Favorite Summer Movies 2016

Worst2First:
My Favorite Summer Movies 2016

With summer officially drawing to a close after Labor Day, it's time to reflect on the movies I was able to see during these warm summer months.  There's a total of 23 movies I saw, and I will be ranking them here from worst to first.  If a movie isn't on this list, it means I haven't seen it and therefore can't have a real opinion on it.

First up are the worst of the bunch, from the absolute worst to the tolerable to the not-so-bad...

#23
The Darkness
A horror movie centering around Native American folklore wasn't scary nor memorable, in fact the only thing I remember is almost falling asleep several times throughout.

#22
WarCraft
Probably not a fair assessment since I never played the game, but personally I found it to be a confusing mess of terrible CGI and a pointless story.

#21
Sausage Party
I just didn't find it funny at all, and it seemed like it tried too hard to be "politically incorrect."

#20
Mechanic: Resurrection
Not even Jessica Alba in a bikini could save this razor-thin plotline, if you could call it a plot at all.

#19
Independence Day: Resurrection
We waited twenty years for them to return, and when they did, we realized we really stopped caring.

#18
Ben Hur
Not AS bad as people said it was, but it still wasn't anything special.

#17
Central Intelligence
Another Kevin Hart film where Kevin Hart plays a Kevin Hart-like character, only with a new A-list actor at his side.

#16
Alice Through the Looking Glass
Nowhere near the actual story, it was muddied with a lame plot and not enough Johnny Depp.

#15
Free State of Jones
Could've done better during Oscar season, but it was still a very drawn-out tale that could've ended an hour before it did.

#14
Suicide Squad
Harley Quinn and the Joker are the only standouts in this otherwise predictable, paint-by-numbers superhero movie.

#13
The Legend of Tarzan
Margot Robbie was the standout in this film, and it serves proof that Alexander Skarsgaard can't lead a film.

#12
Now You See Me 2
Proof positive that a sequel can be made after the original became a surprise success, because it clearly was tacked on after the first came out and pretty much took a dump on it.

#11
Money Monster
A timely tale of the risks of investing in the market, had a great cast and an interesting story, but something that would've fared better in the fall/winter months.

Now we've reached my personal top ten favorite films of summer 2016...

#10
Ghostbusters

I'm about as surprised as you that this made it so far up the list, but looking at the previous films maybe it's not so shocking.  This is a rare case where extremely low expectations glossed over the obvious missteps and resulted in an overall enjoyable film, filled with a likeable cast and laugh-out-loud comedy.  Plus it's the only live-action comedy this summer that had me busting my gut laughing.

#9
The Nice Guys

Another film that had some comedic moments, but it was more a throwback to the classic film noir period with a compelling mystery and great acting by Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, whose chemistry was extremely vibrant.

#8
Jason Bourne

It took a long time for Matt Damon to don his most iconic character, and we're treated with another action spectacle with a timely story and edge-of-your-seat suspense.

#7
Star Trek Beyond

The rebooted "Star Trek" series has been a much-needed re-vitalization of the fifty-year-old brand, and the third film in the new franchise was another action-packed hit with surprisingly moving moments and a great new character in Sofia Boutella's warrior Jaylah.

#6
The Secret Life of Pets

Animation was a huge hit this summer, and "The Secret Life of Pets" was one of those animated gems filled with vibrant visuals, hilarious moments and deeply acted characters by gifted voice actors.

#5
X-Men: Apocalypse

I'm a sucker for the "X-Men" movies, no matter how bad they might be (with the exception of "The Last Stand," that was just terrible).  "Apocalypse" wasn't AS bad as people made it out to be, but there could've been more done to it.  Still, I was very entertained throughout and it was one I saw on multiple occasions.

#4
Finding Dory

Pixar took a big risk in releasing a sequel so long after the original (plus the disastrous "Cars 2" fiasco), but this time their risk paid off in spades as the story was moving, touching, and most of all hilarious, filled with beautiful animation and the always-amazing Ellen DeGeneres as the titular role.

#3
The Conjuring 2

One of those VERY rare horror sequels that possibly even outshined the original, what was most unique about this tale is that it's an entirely different story than the original, where the only thing that ties the two together are the main characters, who were perfectly acted by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga.  Plus the movie was downright terrifying.

#2
Kubo and the Two Strings

Beautiful stop-motion animation, years of blood, sweat and tears in preparation, vibrant action, a heart-warming (and yet heart-wrenching) tale, and very capable voice actors made "Kubo" a surprise for me, a jewel in the rough that touched me in deeply personal ways, and one I still remember to this day.

#1
Captain America: Civil War

Like anyone would be surprised.  I am a Marvel geek through-and-through, and the Russo brothers once again deliver an amazing action-packed spectacle that features some of the best superheroes out there.  Plus they seamlessly introduced upcoming superheroes Black Panther and Spider-Man in brilliant fashion and offered one of the best action sequences in any movie in history.
