Golden Globes 2021 Predictions

Golden Globes 2021 Predictions

While 2020 was a terrible year for films, there were still several awards-worthy contenders that hit the big screen (although most of them debuted on the small screen thanks to Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and the like). The show must go on, and while it's almost two months after the normal airing, the Golden Globes will announce the best in television and movies on February 28th, and I'll give my predictions here.

Film
(Winner pick in bold)

BEST MOTION PICTURE - ANIMATED
The Croods: A New Age
Onward
Over the Moon
Soul
Wolfwalkers
Never bet against Pixar when one of their films is nominated, a pretty easy prediction here.

BEST MOTION PICTURE - FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Another Round - Denmark
La Llorona - Guatemala/France
The Life Ahead - Italy
Minari - USA
Two Of Us - France/USA
I haven't seen any of these films, but only heard how stellar "Minari" is (plus its an A24 production), so I'm choosing that.

BEST SCREENPLAY
Emerald Fennell - Promising Young Woman
Jack Fincher - Mank
Aaron Sorkin - The Trial of the Chicago 7
Florian Zeller, Christopher Hampton - The Father
Chloe Zhao - Nomadland
Although I'd love to pick Zhao or Fennell, I feel the writing for "The Trial of the Chicago 7" was stellar and thought-provoking.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
The Midnight Sky
Tenet
News of the World
Mank
The score to "Tenet" is part of what made the film so surreal and intriguing.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG
Fight for You (Judas and the Black Messiah)
Hear My Voice (The Trial of the Chicago 7)
IO SI (Seen) (The Life Ahead)
Speak Now (One Night in Miami)
Tigers & Tweed (The United States vs. Billie Holliday)
A very tough choice since there's no Disney-branded songs in this category, so I'm going with "Tigers & Tweed."

BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ANY MOTION PICTURE
Sacha Baron Cohen (The Trial of the Chicago 7)
Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah)
Jared Leto (The Little Things)
Bill Murray (On the Rocks)
Leslie Odom, Jr. (One Night in Miami)
It'll come down to Cohen and Kaluuya, but I feel Sacha Baron Cohen's departure from his traditional comedic chops to this more serious (albeit still humorous) role will win the night.

BEST ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ANY MOTION PICTURE
Glenn Close - Hillbilly Elegy
Olivia Colman - The Father
Jodie Foster - The Mauritanian
Amanda Seyfried - Mank
Helena Zengel - News of the World
Seyfried's portrayal of the real life starlet Marion Davies was simply stunning, and her throwback to old Hollywood will probably garner more attention.

BEST ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm)
James Corden (The Prom)
Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton)
Dev Patel (The Personal History of David Copperfield)
Andy Samburg (Palm Springs)
As much as I'd like Samberg to win, I feel that Cohen will take the Globe for his long-awaited return as Borat.

BEST ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE - MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm)
Kate Hudson (Music)
Michelle Pfeiffer (French Exit)
Rosamund Pike (I Care a Lot)
Anya Taylor-Joy (Emma)
I'd personally go with Taylor-Joy, but Maria Bakalova's debut performance in "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" was the best part of the film.

BEST ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA
Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom)
Riz Ahmed (The Sound of Metal)
Anthony Hopkins - (The Father)
Gary Oldman - (Mank)
Tahar Rahim - (The Mauritanian)
I haven't seen "The Father" or "The Mauritanian," but from those I saw it'll easily be Boseman who will posthumously win the Globe for his chill-inducing final performance.

BEST ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA
Viola Davis (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom)
Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday)
Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman)
Frances McDormand (Nomadland)
Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman)
Easily the most stacked of the categories, I could see any woman winning this and being incredibly deserving, but I feel that McDormad's portrayal of a widowed unemployed woman living among the nomads of America will take the Globe.

BEST DIRECTOR
David Fincher - Mank
Regina King - One Night in Miami
Aaron Sorkin - The Trial of the Chicago 7
Chloe Zhao - Nomadland
Emerald Fennell - Promising Young Woman
In a first for the Globes, three women have been nominated for Best Director, and while each director crafted wonderful products and again I could see any of them winning, Chloe Zhao definitely deserves it for her intimiate look into the nomadic life in "Nomadland."

BEST MOTION PICTURE - MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
Hamilton
Music
Palm Springs
The Prom
The Globes are strange with their Musical/Comedy category (remember when "The Martian" won best Comedy?), so in that vein I can see "Hamilton" (which really isn't a movie) winning, but I'm giving it to the more traditional "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" to run the table.

BEST MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA
The Father
Mank
Nomadland
Promising Young Woman
The Trial of the Chicago 7
Once again, every film here deserves to win (even though I haven't seen "The Father," I've heard nothing but good things about it), so I'm going with the film that I personally loved the most, and that was "Nomadland."
