Major Theatrical Releases November 2019

Major Theatrical Releases November 2019
November is chock full of films that are literally for everyone - animated, action, drama, horror, biopic, psychological thriller, whodunit, Christmas, family.  There shouldn't be a reason to not see at least one of these films in the theater this November.

Here are the major theatrical releases for November 2019...

**THERE WILL BE NO SPOILERS**
**DATES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE**

Arctic Dogs
November 1
In this animated film, Jeremy Renner voices Swifty, an Arctic fox who stumbles upon a plan hatched by an evil walrus to melt the polar ice caps so he can reign supreme, and enlists his friends to help stop him.  Basically serving as a marker between "The Addams Family" and "Frozen II," "Arctic Dogs" will be quickly forgotten and hopefully fizzle out so parents won't have to roll their eyes through this very generic looking, poorly animated farce.

Motherless Brooklyn
November 1
In this gritty 1950s crime drama, Edward Norton stars as Lionel Essrog, a private investigator who has Tourette syndrome who has to crack the most important case of his career - the murder of his mentor.  This looks to be a suspense-filled mystery filled with twists and turns, along with a standout cast including Norton, Bruce Willis, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Bobby Cannavale, Cherry Jones, Alec Baldwin and Willem Dafoe.

Terminator: Dark Fate
November 1
The first of the "Terminator" films since the second to involve James Cameron, "Dark Fate" centers its story twenty-seven years after the second film (foregoing all films in-between) and focuses on a new Terminator who's brought to the past by Skynet to terminate a hybrid cyborg human and young girl.  Their only hope lies in Sarah Connor, who's once again played by Linda Hamilton, as well as her allies including John Connor (again played by Edward Furlong) and T-800 (once again portrayed by Arnold Schwarzeneger).  The film looks promising, especially since it's got Cameron involved again - not to mention it's directed by "Deadpool" director Tim Miller - and looks to bring the franchise back to its original roots.

Harriet
November 1
In a world saturated with imaginary superheroes, it's incredibly refreshing to see a biopic about a true superhero.  Cynthia Erivo stars as Harriet Tubman, the abolitionist who escaped slavery and led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom through the Underground Railroad.  Erivo looks to fully encompass the heroine, and this looks to be a stellar work filled with heavily dramatic performances and hopefully an Oscar nod for Erivo.

Doctor Sleep
November 8
"The Shining" has become one of cinema's most iconic horror films (even if Stephen King hated it), and has withstood the test of time to remain as chilling and thrilling as ever.  "Doctor Sleep" is the sequel to the book and movie, featuring Ewan McGregor as a grown-up Danny who tries to hide his "shine" power until he's discovered by a young girl who also exhibits that power, and learns that she's being hunted by a cult who feed on innocent's "shine" in order to achieve immortality.  Blending the past with the present, "Doctor Sleep" looks to continue the "Shining" tradition and hopefully it'll do the original justice.

Last Christmas
November 8
It's never too late for a good Christmas romantic comedy, and that's exactly what we get from director (and co-writer, and star) Emma Thompson's "Last Christmas."  "Game of Thrones" star Emilia Clarke stars as Kate, a young cynical woman who underwent life-saving surgery and now works at a Christmas store and is wholly sarcastic and bitter toward the world until she meets mysterious Tom (played by "Crazy Rich Asians" breakout Henry Golding) who shows her the better side of life.  You can probably tell where this movie is going from the trailer itself, but I won't spoil it for you if you don't see it - suffice it to say this would've been just another Hallmark Channel Christmas movie if it weren't for the big-name actors associated with it.

Midway
November 8
Roland Emmerich has given us some major blockbuster films like "Independence Day" and "The Day After Tomorrow," and returns to his wheelhouse with "Midway," the true story of US Navy sailors who protected Midway island in the Pacific and helped turn the tide of World War II.  Featuring an all-star cast including Ed Skrein, Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Nick Jonas, Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid, Darren Criss, and Woody Harrelson, "Midway" looks to be an explosive action-packed spectacle that only Emmerich could deliver.

Playing With Fire
November 8
"Playing With Fire" focuses on a group of firefighters who take in three kids after their house burns down, and the hilarious hijinks they encounter in doing so.  I should've put quotations around "hilarious" because this doesn't look the least bit funny, but rather a generic babysitting movie where the hardened heart is softened by the love of the children who at moments do the most outlandish things in order to acquire a few giggles.  Or maybe I'm just being cynical - but I doubt it.

Charlie's Angels
November 15
A reboot of a reboot of a classic television series, "Charlie's Angels" tells the story of three headstrong, attractive, and overall fierce women who work undercover to save the world from different threats.  Starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska, this version looks to be even hipper than before, and in a time of #metoo seeks to elevate women to even higher standards.  I was wary at first but the trailer looks like the movie will be a fun, action-packed romp that doesn't require you to use too much thought, so it could be enjoyable.

Ford v Ferrari
November 15
Oscar winners Matt Damon and Christian Bale join "Logan" director James Mangold to tell the biographical story of the determination of the human spirit.  Damon stars as Carroll Shelby, an American automotive designer who enlists his driver Ken Miles (Bale) to help create a new racing car that will finally defeat the unbeatable Ferrari in the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France, and it looks to be a dramatic film filled with great performances.

The Good Liar
November 15
When you get titans like Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren together, expect nothing short of greatness.  "The Good Liar" tells the story of two elderly singles who meet online and begin a relationship, but there's one big secret being hidden - McKellen's character is a conman who's planning on scamming Mirren's character out of all her money, if not more.  I feel like there's more to this film than just this premise, and I can't wait to see what these two veterans bring to the table.

21 Bridges
November 22
Starring Chadwick Boseman and produced by Joe and Anthony Russo (of "Endgame" fame), "21 Bridges" will be an action mystery centering around a group of cop killers who purposefully lure cops to crimes just to kill them.  Boseman stars as NYPD detective Andre Davis who is tasked with finding the culprits (whose own father was a cop killed in the line of duty) by shutting down New York City.  Co-starring J.K. Simmons, Sienna Miller, and Taylor Kitch, "21 Bridges" looks to be an intense action thriller with a huge mystery at its center.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
November 22
Speaking of true-life superheroes, Fred Rogers was one of the world's best humans, a man who truly loved everyone and lived a life determined to show that love to everyone.  Last year's stellar documentary "Won't You Be My Neighbor" proved to a new world what a light Rogers was, and now he's getting a much-deserved biopic featuring one of this generation's most talented and nicest actors - Tom Hanks.  Hanks hasn't been nominated for an Oscar since 2001, but I think this will be the year he'll get another nomination (then again, I said the documentary would win last year and it wasn't even nominated), but even if he doesn't, this looks to be a crowd pleasing film that we need now more than ever before.

Frozen II
November 22
"Frozen" was a worldwide success, and garnered one of the most catchy songs in modern memory with "Let It Go," and fans have eagerly awaited its sequel, and now it's almost here.  This film takes place three years after the original, and looks to be an exciting adventure far beyond the walls of Arendelle as Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven set out north to find the origin of Elsa's powers and how they can save their kingdom.  This film looks darker than the original, and sets itself up to be a stellar sequel to a wildly beloved original.

Knives Out
November 27
Rian Johnson writes and directs this neo-noir black comedy murder mystery in the guise of the classic Agatha Christie mysteries.  When a wealthy old man invites his dysfunctional family to join him for his birthday, he ends up dead and the entire family becomes a suspect in a classic whodunit film that I feel will be anything than ordinary.  The cast itself is a venerable who's who of A-list actors including Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, Christopher Plummer, Ana de Armas, Lakeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford and Jaeden Martell, and looks to be every bit as witty, exciting, and mysterious as you'd expect it to be.

Queen & Slim
 November 27
In this modern-day Bonnie and Clyde story, Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith stars as Slim and Queen who meet online for a date and whose world is turned upside down when they're pulled over by a white officer and Slim shoots him in self-defense.  The two end up on the run as they're hunted by the police and harbored by those who believe in their innocence, and looks to be as hot-button as the topic they focus on, especially in such a polarizing time as this.  The cinematography looks amazing, and it looks to deliver strong performances from Kaluuya and newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith.
