Worst2First: My Top Ten Best Picture Oscar Nominees That Didn't Win

Worst2First:
My Top Ten Best Picture
Oscar Nominees That Didn't Win

They say it's an honor to just be nominated, but in the heart of everyone who's nominated for an Academy Award, they desperately desire to win that golden statue.  While there can only be one winner per year, there's several nominees who easily could've taken the gold instead.

Here are my personal top ten Best Picture Oscar nominees that didn't win, worst2first...

**THERE WILL BE NO SPOILERS**

#10
 Call Me By Your Name

One of the most poignant, powerful love stories of modern time, "Call Me By Your Name" was filled with fantastic performances, beautiful cinematography, and a stirring story, but it lost to "The Shape of Water."

#9
 Avatar

A stunning cinematic achievement, "Avatar" became the highest grossing movie of all time for awhile (before "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" beat it), and included state-of-the-art CGI mixed with a thoughtful story, but it couldn't beat out "The Hurt Locker" for the big win.

#8
 There Will Be Blood
One of Daniel Day-Lewis's memorable performances, "There Will Be Blood" was a tense, dramatic film filled with powerful performances and a compelling story, but lost the Oscar to "No Country for Old Men."

#7
 Mystic River

Clint Eastwood's gut-wrenching, memorable film "Mystic River" featured tremendous performances and other Oscar wins, but couldn't get the main prize, loosing to "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King."

#6
 Gangs of New York

Martin Scorsese's epic masterpiece "Gangs of New York" featured a star-studded cast, compelling performances, and the tried-and-true story of revenge, but none of that could win the film the coveted trophy, instead going to "Chicago."

#5
Taxi Driver

Martin Scorsese's directing and Robert De Niro's career-defining performance couldn't help "Taxi Driver" from achieving the Best Picture award, instead it lost to another career-defining performance film: Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky."

#4
 Raging Bull

Once again, although Martin Scorsese directs a timeless film, and Robert De Niro gives a tremendous performance, "Raging Bull" fell short of winning the Best Picture Oscar, loosing to "Ordinary People."

#3
 Chinatown

A throwback to the classic film noir, "Chinatown" featured a compelling story, stellar acting (especially from Jack Nicholson), and some one-of-a-kind cinematography, but ultimately it didn't stand a chance at winning the Best Picture, since "The Godfather Part II" was nominated the same year.

#2
 The Shawshank Redemption

It's still shocking that this piece of cinematic brilliance failed to win the Best Picture Oscar, as it offered everything one could ask for in a film - unforgettable acting, a thoughtful script, and a timeless tale of retribution - but it was up against some stiff competition, loosing out to "Forrest Gump."

#1
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Still one of cinema's most unforgettable trilogies - as well as one that will define the 2000s - "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" couldn't snag the Best Picture Oscar from "A Beautiful Mind."
