Major Theatrical Releases
February 2019
February looks like a mixed bag of possibly great and possibly dull films, and only time will tell where these films will fall.

Here are the major theatrical releases coming out February 2019...

**THERE WILL BE NO SPOILERS**
**ALSO DATES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE**

Miss Bala
February 1
Gina Rodriguez stars as Gloria, a woman from Los Angeles who visits her friend in Mexico, only to have her kidnapped and she becomes entangled in a drug cartel as well as working undercover for the DEA in order to save herself and her friend.  Basically this looks like the run-of-the-mill action adventure where they'll be many "close calls" and tension until the final blood-less (since it's PG-13) soaked conclusion.  Gina Rodriguez is trying to branch out more than her typecast comedic role in "Jane the Virgin," but this forgettable action film isn't a good start (or continuation, as she did appear in the more fantastic "Annihilation" last year, but more as a supporting role).

Cold Pursuit
February 8
At first the Liam Neeson action movie was all the rage, but now the appeal has softened.  He's fought bad guys for his family ("Taken" - three times), fought bad guys on a plane ("Non-Stop"), a train ("The Commuter") and now the frigid cold of a wannabe Ice Road Trucker.  Avenging the death of his son, Neeson goes out to kill a gang of drug dealers but of course he's a simple mild mannered older man, so no one suspects him, yadda yadda yadda.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
February 8
The first "LEGO Movie" was a surprise hit, one that both old and young enjoyed tremendously.  The vocal talents of Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Will Ferrell, and Morgan Freeman - combined with stunning animations and a hilarious, razor-sharp script - made for a easily re-watchable film.  Now most of the cast is back for the sequel, where Chris Pratt's Emmet must save his friends from an intergalactic invader named Sweet Mayhem after his world is turned into a vast wasteland where everyone is hardened - except for him.  This looks to be another action-packed, hilarious thrill ride and I can't wait to see it.

What Men Want
February 8
Serving as a spiritual sequel to the Mel Gibson-helmed "What Women Want," Taraji P. Henson finds that she now has the ability to hear the inner thoughts of men after taking a weird drink and bonking herself on the head.  Obviously, in the era of #metoo, a film like "What Women Want" would never fly, so now it's the girls' turn to turn the tables on the men who do them wrong, and Henson is pitch perfect for the role.  Looks to be a fun, funny ride through the inner mind of the man.

The Prodigy
February 8
Typically, any horror movies coming out on months that don't begin with "Oct" are usually bad and forgettable, which is what "The Prodigy" looks to be.  When young Miles exhibits behavior very strange for his age, his parents begin to think something is wrong with him - and of course they're right.  This looks to be as forgettable as that...other...movie...whose name I can't remember.

Happy Death Day 2U
February 13
"Happy Death Day" was a surprise hit two years ago, a re-vitalization of the slasher genre, and making a star out of Jessica Rothe.  Rothe played Tree, a sorority girl who got caught in a time loop on her birthday where she gets murdered every day until she could solve her own murder.  Having accomplished that, she thought the terror was over, but now she finds herself again stuck in a time loop, but this time the killer isn't just targeting her, but her friends as well - and she has to die every day to save their lives.  The first blended horror with dark humor beautifully, and this looks more of the same - which is just fine by me.

Isn't It Romantic
February 13
After bonking her head (it seems that February features a lot of women doing that), Natalie (played by the hilarious Rebel Wilson) wakes up to find herself in her worst nightmare - a romantic comedy!  And it's PG-13!  The first time I saw the trailer I groaned, thinking this is just going to be another "I Feel Pretty" where the lead suffers from poor self image and discovers the inner beauty within, and while I still think that'll be the premise, I'm finding myself more entertained by the trailer every time I see it.  Looks to be a decent satirical look at romantic comedies and the tropes they play into.

Alita: Battle Angel
February 14
Generally when you have to force down the throats of viewers that a film is from some famous director, you're bound for a letdown (see last year's "Mortal Engines" for reference).  In 2019, it's "Alita: Battle Angel" - which was supposed to be released like four times before, but kept getting pushed back.  From producer James Cameron!  Directed by Robert Rodriguez!  Yeah basically this looks like a CGI-crapfest about a girl who is also robotic and fights other robotic people while trying to get to main bad guy Mahershala Ali (who's going to regret starring in this drivel after he wins another Oscar in a few weeks), filled to the brim with aforementioned CGI and action up the wazoo, but no one will be interested.

Fighting With My Family
February 14
A family of wrestlers find themselves at odds against each other when the brother and sister earn the right to apply to the WWE, with only one of them making it.  This looks like a perfect blend of family comedy, action, drama and heart, with solid performances and Dwayne Johnson playing his old persona The Rock to perfection.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
February 22
I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this third film in the "How to Train Your Dragon" franchise, because everything about it seems to scream "made for TV movie!"  With humans and dragons co-existing in harmony, it's only a matter of time before someone tries to disrupt that balance, which leads to the search for the Hidden World where dragons live - meanwhile our favorite dragon Toothless finds love.  This doesn't look bad necessarily, just...unnecessary.

So there are the major films being released in February 2019.
Here is the order in which I want to see them:
#10 - The Prodigy
#9 - Cold Pursuit
#8 - Miss Bala
#7 - How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
#6 - Alita: Battle Angel
#5 - Fighting With My Family
#4 - What Men Want
#3 - Isn't It Romantic
#2 - The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
#1 - Happy Death Day 2U
