My Top Ten Films to Watch On Drugs
Not to say I'm an advocate for drug use, I've never used them myself nor would I encourage one to do so, but there are certain films out there that seem to be designed for the drug-addicted individual - either due to their colors, content, or characters. Here are my personal top ten films to watch on drugs, worst2first...

#10
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Charlie Kaufman is an interesting writer to say the least. He's written some of the most mind-bending scripts including "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" and "Being John Malkovich," along with "Eternal Sunshine." Jim Carrey stars as a man who undergoes a surgery to help forget his old girlfriend after she does the same to him, and begins experiencing memories with her that may or may not have happened, sending the duo to strange places and engaging in events that could never had happened (such as having a bed on the beach). Filled with interesting imagery and eccentric performances, I could imagine someone on drugs might fully appreciate all the film has to offer.
#9
The Doors
It probably sounds cliche, but rock stars are probably best known for the copious amounts of drugs they use. "The Doors" focuses on the story of how Jim Morrison formed The Doors after a psychedelic experience in the desert, and there's several drug scenes in the film. Directed by Oliver Stone, the film is well-known for its iconic scene where the band goes to the desert to take peyote.
#8
Apocalypse Now
War is hell, and Francis Ford Coppola's classic "Apocalypse Now" shows that in vivid, psychedelic detail. Set during the Vietnam War, we witness several soldiers taking part in all sorts of drugs, including marijuana and LSD, and Coppola uses some extremely off-the-wall sets and lighting to make the viewer disoriented, and feel like they're on an acid trip themselves - even if they already are.
#7
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Based on the novel by Hunter S. Thompson (who was fueled by alcohol and drug use in writing his novel), Terry Gilliam brings "Fear and Loathing" to the big screen in all its acid-tripping glory. Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro star as two men who travel to Las Vegas to cover a motorcycle race, and all the while indulging in all types of drugs. Gilliam uses trippy imagery and camera angles to give the sensation that the viewer in on the same amount of drugs as the characters in the film are.
#6
The Big Lebowski
Known for its off-the-wall narrative, the Coen brothers film "The Big Lebowski" gave birth to Jeff Bridges's most iconic character - The Dude. Having smoked endless amounts of pot, The Dude embarks on a journey to retrieve his rug, and experiences several drugged-out scenes, including the now-famous bowling alley scene.
#5
The Wizard of Oz
The classic technicolor filming style pops for people on drugs, because it's such a throwback style that you can't help but appreciate it. Many people consider the film as one long acid trip, as Dorothy travels to a far-away land with talking lions, flying monkeys and a green-skinned witch - for starters. For someone on acid, it would definitely be a trip to another world altogether.
#4
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Gene Wilder's eccentric performance aside, this film is a stoner's paradise - it takes place in a magical chocolate factory filled with every type of munchie a stoner could wish for. From chocolate rivers to every type of chocolate you can imagine, the film transports the viewer to...well...a place of pure imagination, fueled even moreso with a little help from marijuana.
#3
Trainspotting
Sometimes films showcase the dangers of drug use, and "Trainspotting" is one of those films - sort of. The film centers around a group of friends in Scotland who partake heroin, and the destructive results of it. Featuring an all-star cast, the film has several trippy moments, none of which more iconic than the baby walking on the ceiling.
#2
2001: A Space Odyssey
Stanley Kubrick's classic space opera is not for the faint of heart - there's long stretches of the film where nothing really happens, but Kubrick infused some state of the art effects (so beyond its time it earned an Oscar for Best Effects) that anyone on a drug trip would probably appreciate, especially the flashy colors coming at you at rapid pace.
#1
Requiem for a Dream
As unnerving as it is for someone who's free of drugs, this film will probably be the ultimate freak trip for those on drugs. Darren Aronofsky takes viewers on a journey through the eyes of four individuals (played by Ellen Burstyn, Jennifer Connelly, Jared Leto and Marlon Wayans) as they use and abuse all types of drugs and the devastating effects of them. We see in full force the nightmares of addiction and the pains it puts people through, and if you were on drugs when you saw this, it might convince you to stop cold turkey.
