My Top Ten Walking Dead Characters
Premiering October 22, the eighth season of "The Walking Dead" looks to be its most action-packed yet, with Rick's group finally standing up to Negan and The Saviors and waging All Out War, one of the most popular moments from the graphic novels. I expect a lot of action, heartbreak, death and excitement this season, and there's some I'm really worried about losing, including everyone on this list. Here is my top ten "Walking Dead" characters, worst2first...
**THERE WILL BE SPOILERS FOR THE SHOW AND GRAPHIC NOVELS, SO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!**
#10
Jesus Rovia
Introduced in season six, Jesus was the stealthy ninja that wouldn't leave Rick and Daryl alone during their search for supplies, constantly escaping any bounds the two men put on him. It turns out that he's one of the good guys, a scout and scavenger for The Hilltop who introduces Rick to a bigger world. He is skilled at hand-to-hand combat and helps Maggie and Sasha at The Hilltop against their weak leader, Gregory. I love him because he's a skilled fighter, and we've only just begun to see how much butt he can kick, and for sure there will be more butt-kicking in season eight.
#9
Negan
Introduced in spectacular fashion at the end of season six, Negan is the true Big Bad of "The Walking Dead," who makes The Governor look like a Disney villain. His appearance is straight out of the graphic novels, and was a point of contention for fans who were shocked to see him kill someone, but we didn't know who until the start of season seven. Turns out Abraham got Lucille'd, but he wasn't done. In graphic novel fashion, he then turned his barbed-wire bat onto our lovable Glenn, cementing him as a huge villain. Season seven continued his evil reign as we see how many Saviors there truly are, and how he rules them with an iron fist. We also saw him take Daryl captive, act as a strange father surrogate to Carl, respect Sasha even though she infiltrated his lair, and accept Eugene as one of his own. It seems that the show is following the novels more closely, and if it continues then we'll be seeing Negan for a long time to come, and his heroic character arc that will be astounding to see.
#8
Tara Chambler
Tara was introduced way back in season four, coming into contact with The Governor after Woodbury fell, but she didn't know his true evil nature. After losing her father, she goes with The Governor, her sister Lilly, and niece Meghan to another settlement where The Governor takes control, kidnaps Hershel and Michonne, and attacks the prison where Rick is holed up. After he decapitates Hershel, Tara goes into shell shock and witnesses her girlfriend getting killed, along with Meghan and Lilly. In the aftermath of the prison attack, Glenn finds her alone and ready to die, but takes pity on her and they travel together to find Maggie, meeting Abraham, Rosita and Eugene along the way. After reuniting with the rest of the group, Tara is welcomed to their ranks as one of their own and she serves as a skillful fighter and scavenger, even finding the Oceanside community where there's only women and a large supply of weapons to use against Negan. Tara is the comedic center of the show, and almost always takes things light-heatedly. She has lost a lot and it's turned her into a warrior, and seeing her character arc from Rick's enemy to ally has been amazing to watch.
#7
Rick Grimes
Rick is the heart and soul of "The Walking Dead," the undisputed ruler of our lovable gang and father to Carl and Judith. He's not always made the right decisions during the apocalypse, but everything he's done has been for the safety of those under his command. He's done some terrible things (biting Joe's neck after his gang threatened to rape Carl, completely annihilating the Terminus group after finding out they were cannibals, for starters), but it's all been for the greater good. Now involved with Michonne, Rick again has found love during the end of the world, and a community worth fighting for. After Negan's entrance, Rick was emasculated, but thanks to Michonne he got his bearings back and is now prepared for All Out War, and the infamous time jump that follows (for those of you wondering about the end of the season eight trailer, it wasn't Rick waking up from his coma, but him two years after the War, during the graphic novel time jump, so there's no need to worry).
#6
King Ezekiel
Introduced in season seven, King Ezekiel is easily the most eccentric person Rick's group has come into contact with, and it'd be pretty much impossible to top him. Morgan and Carol were taken to his Kingdom after being attacked by a Savior, and they meet the illustrious King, sitting on a throne, with his own servants...and pet tiger Shiva. He spoke in Shakespearean English, but Carol saw through his facade, and he comes clean to her, telling her that he's put on this act since the start to give people hope, yet even he can't escape Negan's clutches, as he submits to the tyrant by giving him weekly offerings. When Rick's group arrives at the Kingdom, he pleads with Ezekiel to fight with them, but he doesn't want a war - until Morgan opens his eyes after the Saviors kill one of his own, and Ezekiel finally realizes that he has to fight to survive. The end of the season sees Ezekiel, Morgan, Carol, Shiva and the Kingdom soldiers fighting alongside Rick at Alexandria, and now he's ready for the All Out War that's coming.
#5
Maggie Rhee
Coming onto the scene back in season two, Maggie was Hershel's oldest daughter, a loyal farm girl and somewhat oblivious to the world around her. When Rick's group arrives at the farm, she takes a liking to Glenn, and the two become one of the best couples in modern television history. After the prison fell (and seeing her father beheaded), Maggie escapes with Bob and Sasha, but looses her sister Beth and Glenn. Glenn eventually reunites with her, but then she finds out her sister is dead. She's gone through severe heartbreak, but there was also hope as she finds out she's pregnant. Then season seven begins with Negan brutally killing Glenn in front of her, and she heads to The Hilltop, where she slowly begins gaining command over Gregory, showing herself to be a true world-weary warrior who the townspeople respect more than Gregory. Season eight ends with Maggie leading The Hilltop to attack Negan's forces at Alexandria, and unites with Rick and Ezekiel to combine the three communities against The Saviors. No doubt Maggie will follow her graphic novel counterpart and eventually rule over The Hilltop, and it will be glorious.
#4
Daryl Dixon
Daryl has been with Rick since the beginning, everyone's lovable redneck with his trusty bow and arrow, a warrior for the apocalypse anyone would die to have on their team. He's been through hell and back, having to put down his own brother after he turned, and formed a deep relationship with Carol after she looses her daughter. Season seven was a true turning point for Daryl, because he lashed out at Negan which led to him killing Glenn, so he felt responsible. Negan took him captive and held him in the worst conditions possible, one that would turn a lesser man mad. Not Daryl, however. He never bowed to Negan, and managed to escape thanks to Dwight and Jesus, making his way back to Rick and becoming a solid soldier against the Saviors. No doubt he will continue to dominate and get his revenge against those who wronged him, and as a fan favorite I don't see him going anywhere anytime soon.
#3
Carol Peletier
No one has had a more impressive character arc than Carol. In the first season she was a mild housewife, being abused by her husband and never speaking up for herself. After her husband was bit, she continued her mousy ways until her only child died and turned into a Walker, and then she began to find herself. At the prison she taught the children how to fight, and even killed two of their own because they were sick and could've led to a pandemic. In season five, she single-handedly invaded Terminus and rescued Rick and the others, showing herself to be a true BA. At Alexandria, she took on a motherly role, slyly infiltrating the community to make sure they were on the up-and-up, but never losing her killing edge, until young Sam died after being frightened by the Walkers she warned him about. It changed her into a remorseful person who refused to kill again, and season seven saw her mostly in the foreground not doing a whole lot. Thankfully, she got her killing spirit back at the end and joined Ezekiel and the others in protecting Alexandria against Negan, and it looks like Rambo Carol is back and ready to fight. I can't wait to see what carnage she'll dish out in season eight.
#2
Michonne
From her inception in the graphic novels, Michonne has been my bae. She's a hardened warrior, a no-nonsense woman who wields a katana and slices and dices with the best of them, and that's due in part to her troubled past, where her young son was killed by Walkers after her boyfriend let his guard down. She repaid him by chaining him and his friend (who had both turned to Walkers) and using them to mask her scent as she walked among the undead. She comes across Andrea after the farm fell, and joined Rick's group against The Governor. She was with Rick through Terminus and all the way to Alexandria, where they began a relationship which could hurt her in the future. At the end of season eight, she got her butt handed to her by a Scavenger, and nearly died because of it. Her love for Rick has clouded her judgment, and she needs to find her true mojo back in the next season if she has any hopes of defeating Negan. I hope she can bounce back and return to the Samurai Goddess she is.

Shiva
SHIVA IS LIFE! SHIVA IS AWESOME! SHIVA IS THE MOST AMAZING THING IN THE HISTORY OF LIFE!Sorry, once again I got a bit excited, but I can't get enough of this amazing, beautiful, fierce, adorable, DO YOU SEE DARYL PETTING HER AND SHE LOOKS ALL SWEET AND INNOCENT AND THEN SHE DEFENDS CARL BY LITERALLY EATING A SAVIOR TO DEATH?!?!? SHE IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Having been rescued by Ezekiel when he was a zookeeper, Shiva remained by his side, always his faithful pet and the most amazing thing ever in the history of civilization. SERIOUSLY DARYL IS JUST PETTING HER AND SHE LOOKS SO ADORABLE!!!!!
Anyway, I write this with extreme sadness, because I know what happens to Shiva in the graphic novels, and it looks like it'll happen to her this coming season from the season eight trailer. After a battle goes wrong, Ezekiel retreats to the woods where he comes upon a group of Walkers, and Shiva jumps in to save him by taking out as many as she could, but eventually succumbing to them. There's a scene in the trailer where she's fighting Walkers, and I fear that this is her swan song, and if true heaven will get a new angel, and I will probably call off work for a week to mourn. Because SHIVA IS AWESOME! SHIVA IS LIFE!
