Major Film Releases September 2021

Major Film Releases September 2021
The last time I did this was in March of 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic effectively shut down theaters and postponed most of the major films to 2021. Even at the start of 2021, the theaters were questionable as to whether or not they'd re-open, but thankfully they started opening up more during the summer, and despite the Delta Variant running rampant, it seems that the theaters are back to stay. Although, since its downtime, the streaming services began to pick up momentum, and some major films have now been relegated to the streaming services instead, so from now on I'll be focusing on major theatrical releases, but also major releases coming to streaming services as well. That being said, it's time to reveal the major films being released in September 2021.

**THERE WILL BE NO SPOILERS**
**DATES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE**

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

September 3
In Theaters Only
Disney+ October 18th

The MCU is taking some of its biggest risks yet in the 2021 fall season, first with "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings." Shang-Chi is not a well-known superhero like Iron Man, Captain America, or Thor, and it'll be interesting to see how he will fare in the international marketplace. Newcomer Simu Liu plays the titular hero, a man who has extraordinary martial arts capabilities and whose family runs the ten rings organization, led by his villainous father Wenwu, who are bent on world domination at any cost. The trailers keep giving me "Mortal Kombat" vibes (probably due to the blue and gold colors being used in reference to the powerful rings), and there's still not a lot known about the concept of the film, which adds a sense of excitement that might not otherwise have been there.

Cinderella
September 3
Amazon Prime Exclusive

The story of Cinderella has been told and re-told since its first iteration in the classic novel was written way back in 1697, and this one looks to be a blend of a modern day re-telling and the classic story mixed into one, with some catchy song-and-dance numbers. Former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello makes her theatrical debut as the titular heroine, but this time she's a fashion designer kept under the thumb of her wicked stepmother (played by "Frozen" star Idina Menzel). When she's left at home for the night of the big ball, her genderless fiary godparent (played by Billy Porter) visits her and changes her into the beautiful Cinderella with one of her designs. What looks like to be the traditional story of Cinderella falling for the handsome Prince (Nicholas Galitzine) could turn into Cinderella choosing between true love and her true passion. Regardless, it looks like it'll be a fun time with some catchy tunes and an interesting direction for the well-known character.

Malignant

James Wan is the modern day equivalent of John Carpenter, George A. Romero, and Wes Craven - a masterful horror director who's given birth to the twenty-first century's best horror films like "Saw," "Insidious," and "The Conjuring." Now he tells the story of Madison (Annabelle Wallis), a woman who witnesses murders being committed by a being known as Gabriel, who could be a demonic presence that's haunted Madison since childhood. It looks to be another stylish, gruesome horror epic by the modern day master of horror, and the visuals look absolutely stunning.

The Alpinist
September 10
In Theaters

In 2018, the documentary "Free Solo" exploded on the big screen, telling the extraordinary story of Alex Honnold, a young man who climbs mountains free solo - meaning with no ropes, harnesses, or other protective equipment. The film earned the 2019 Academy Award for Best Documentary, and now it's time to hear the story of Canadian Marc-Andre Leclerc, a young free solo climber who specializes in climbing frozen mountains. Once again it looks to be a death-defying documentary filled with tense moments and an uplifting story that'll touch the hearts and minds of the viewers watching it.

Queenpins

September 10
In Theaters

Kristen Bell and Kirby Howell-Baptiste star in this real-life story of two down-and-out women who come up with a scheme to make some money - by creating counterfeit coupons. Their dastardly deeds are investigated by the feds, played by Vince Vaughn and Paul Walter Hauser, and everything about this film feels very mediocre and bland. There's nothing about the trailer that makes me excited to see it, or even care about it in any capacity, so hopefully I'm wrong but I feel like this will end up being a complete dud.

The Card Counter
September 10
In Theaters

Academy Award-nominated director and frequent writer for Martin Scorsese Paul Scrader returns to the director's chair with "The Card Counter," a film centering on the mysterious William Tell (Oscar Isaacs), a former military interrogator who's now a professional card counter in the casino circuit as he tries to evade the demons of his past. Co-starring Tiffany Haddish (in a rare dramatic role), Tye Sheridan and Willem Dafoe, "The Card Counter" looks to be a thrilling heist-style movie with several twists and turns and a compelling lead performance by Isaac.

Cry Macho
September 17
In Theaters
On HBOMax

At 91 years of age, Clint Eastwood doesn't understand the word "retirement." Not only did he direct "Cry Macho," but he also stars as a former rodeo star sent by his friend (country music legend Dwight Yoakam) to Mexico to retrieve his son (Eduardo Minett). This looks like another traditional Eastwood-led film where the gruff but lovable main character undergoes a transformation after coming into contact with someone from a different point of view and lifestyle, and once again proves that age ain't nothing but a number, and talent is ageless.

Everybody's Talking About Jamie
September 17
Amazon Prime Exclusive

"Everybody's Talking About Jamie" is the film version of the stage musical of the same name, and focuses on sixteen-year-old Jamie New (played by Max Harwood), who wishes more than anything to be a drag queen. He is met by opposition by his stepfather and the bullies in his high school, but thanks to his own determination and the support of his mother, friends, and former drag queen Hugo Battersby (Richard E. Grant), Jamie sets out to achieve his dreams and show that you can do anything you want to do as long as you put your mind to it.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye
September 17
In Theaters

In the world of televangelism, no other names draw as much ire and remembrance than that of Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker, who came under fire for alleged fraud charges during their meteoric rise to fame and power in the Christian community. Andrew Garfield plays Jim Bakker, and Jessica Chastain once again transforms herself to play Tammy Faye, and it looks like the awards will come knocking on her door this season with her performance.

Dear Evan Hansen

September 24
In Theaters

If there's a movie that's needed now more than ever, it's "Dear Evan Hansen." Based on the award-winning musical, the film version follows Evan Hansen (played by Ben Platt, who also played the role in the musical), a loner with Social Anxiety Disorder who writes letters to himself. When a fellow classmate finds one of his letters, he takes it home with him, and then he kills himself. Believing the letter Evan wrote to himself was written by Connor, his family welcomes Evan in and he wants to do the right thing, but keeps finding himself being pulled into lies that comforts those around him. Featuring music by "The Greatest Showman" writers Pasek and Paul, and with a stellar cast and important message about not being alone in a world of isolation, "Dear Evan Hansen" will bring out the waterworks in everyone.

There are the major films coming out in September 2021.
Here is the order in which I'm most excited to see them, from least to most:

#10 - Queenpins
#9 - Everybody's Talking About Jamie
#8 - Cinderella
#7 - The Card Counter
#6 - Cry Macho
#5 - The Eyes of Tammy Faye
#4 - Malignant
#3 - The Alpinist
#2 - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
#1 - Dear Evan Hansen
