Major Theatrical Releases October 2019
October promises a load of highly anticipated films - from possible awards contenders to long-awaited sequels and everything in-between.

Here are the major theatrical releases for October 2019.

**THERE WILL BE NO SPOILERS**
**DATES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE**

Joker
October 4
DC is taking Marvel's route with their most iconic villain, giving him a full "Logan" treatment with "Joker," a film that's seemingly more a dramatic performance than full-on superhero film.  Joaquin Phoenix dons the iconic Joker makeup in this origin story unlike anything told before, and we get to see the inner workings of Batman's most vile villain, and Phoenix looks poised to earn an Oscar nomination for his performance here.  Dark and bleak, "Joker" will tell the story of how the mild-mannered Arthur Flek becomes the monstrous Joker and it looks to be a deep character study that Joaquin Phoenix is more than capable to handle.

The Addams Family
October 11
All the way back in 1964, "The Addams Family" debuted on television, and as the decades progressed it began to fall into more and more obscurity.  It received a resurgence with the live-action film in 1991 and successful video game, but nothing's been heard of the family for over twenty years.  Now there's an animated film coming out featuring our favorite family who puts the "fun" in dysfunctional, and it looks like it'll be something parents would want to see more than their children, but it could be good for everyone.  The voice cast is outstanding including Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloe Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, Nick Kroll, Snoop Dogg, Bette Midler and Allison Janney, and there's not a lot of children's counter-programming for the coming Halloween season.

Gemini Man
October 11
Directed by "Life of Pi" director Ang Lee, "Gemini Man" stars Will Smith as an older assassin who must defeat his hardest target yet - a younger clone of himself.  Lee is no stranger to excellent effects, and it looks almost believable to see Will Smith as both a younger and older version of himself.  This looks to be a fierce, action-packed sci-fi film featuring Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Clive Owen, and also offers a tantalizing mystery as well - why was he cloned, and what secrets do they possess?

Jexi
October 11
In a comedy tailor-made for today's world, Adam DeVine stars as Phil, a pop culture writer who has no friends and is completely reliant on his phone.  His new phone comes with a surprising addition - Jexi, a virtual A.I. life coach, who sets out to make his life better.  As Phil sets out of his comfort zone and finds friends and love, Jexi becomes jealous and sets out to ruin everything successful in Phil's life, leading to comedic results.  DeVine is comedic gold, and if there's anything that 2019 has taught us, is that Rose Byrne can deliver a menacing vocal performance (check out Netflix's "I Am Mother"), and she once again turns up the chills as the emotionless Jexi.

The Lighthouse
October 18
Robert Eggers' "The Witch" has been hailed as one of this century's most unnerving horror films, and he finally returns to the big screen with "The Lighthouse," produced by A24.  The film only stars two actors - Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson - as two lighthouse keepers who spend their isolated days together, facing loneliness, boredom, and everything in between.  Shot in black and white and using 35mm film, the claustrophobia will be apparent to the audience as they delve into the minds of these two men and the ultimate madness that will likely consume them, and it's going to be an insane ride.

Jojo Rabbit
October 18
In this satirical take on World War II, "Thor: Ragnarok" director Taika Waititi tells the story of ten-year-old Jojo "Rabbit" Beltzer, a German boy who wants to be a Nazi and has a very unique imaginary friend - Adolf Hitler, played by Waititi himself.  His world is turned upside down when he finds his mother has been harboring a Jewish girl, and their communication leads Jojo to question everything he once held dear.  Consisting of a strong cast including young Roman Griffin and Thomasin McKenzie, along with veterans Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell and Rebel Wilson, "Jojo Rabbit" looks to be a great comedic tour-de-force.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
October 18
In one of the most surprising moves Disney made this year, they announced the release of their highly-anticipated sequel "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" for October.  The first film was different than Disney's other live-action adaptations of their animated classics in that they weave Maleficent as an anti-hero and eventually savior to young Aurora, and here it looks like she's returning to her old evil ways after Aurora accepts a marriage proposal from Prince Phillip.  Maleficent is against the marriage, and sets out to destroy the kingdom after Phillip's mother claims Aurora as her own child - but from the looks of the trailer, it seems that Maleficent is again the surprising hero.  Angelina Jolie returns to the now-iconic role, as does Elle Fanning as Aurora, and Michelle Pfeiffer joins the cast as Phillip's mother Queen Ingrith, who may harbor nefarious plans for the young Aurora.

Zombieland: Double Tap
October 18
The first "Zombieland" became a massive hit, and serves as one of this generation's best zombie comedies, and almost immediately word of a sequel hit the airwaves - but that was in 2009.  As the years went by, the four actors found acclaim and credibility in other films, and it seemed that the sequel would never happen - but now it has.  Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin and Emma Stone return for a second helping of "nut up or shut up" zombie slaughter fun, and it's looking to be as wildly entertaining and funny as the original.

Black and Blue
October 25
Rookie police officer Alicia West captures the murder of a drug dealer on her body cam, but discovers that it was committed by her partner and a gang of dirty cops who want her (and her cam) silenced at any cost.  Abandoned by the police force she once considered family, she turns to a man on the streets to protect her and get the cam footage out there, all the while being hunted down by local gangs who've received a lucrative bounty on her head.  Starring Naomie Harris, Tyrese Gibson and Frank Grillo, "Black and Blue" looks to be an intense, suspenseful thriller that plays to the current fears of millions of Americans - the corruption of those who were sworn to protect us.

Countdown
October 25
This year Halloween is looking to supply some slim pickings for movie-goers, as "Countdown" is the only true horror film being released, and it looks like it's one you should swipe left for.  This predictable yawn centers of a group of friends who download an app that supposedly tells them when they'll die, and when the countdown reaches 0, they die.  The only way to prevent this is to last one second longer than the countdown, which is probably impossible but who cares?  There's no real big names here, and looks to be generic and full of jump scares and thinly written characters.

There are the major films coming out October 2019, and here's the order in which I'm most excited to see them, starting with the least:

 #10 - The Addams Family
#9 - Countdown
#8 - Jexi
#7 - Gemini Man
#6 - Black and Blue
#5 - Jojo Rabbit
#4 - Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
#3 - Zombieland: Double Tap
#2 - The Lighthouse
#1 - Joker
