Major Theatrical Releases September 2017
The start of fall brings some exciting films to the cinema. From classic horror to the return of one of cinema's most prolific directors, from a lovable family-friendly animated brand to true-life tales, September will bring some great films to the screen. Here are the major theatrical releases for September 2017.
**There will be no spoilers**
**Dates are still subject to change**
It
September 8
Based off one of Stephen King's most iconic novels, "It" finally gets the big screen treatment after the Tim Curry-led made-for-television movie. In a small town in Maine, children are disappearing, and it's all because of Pennywise the Dancing Clown, an evil demon who lives in the sewers and draws children in. A group of youths band together - despite their own personal issues - to combat this evil and make the streets safe again. From the first trailer on, this looks to be a downright terrifying, unnerving, unrelenting horror film that will do justice to the source material - unlike that OTHER Stephen King adaptation that came out in August, "The Dark Tower."
Home Again
September 8
Reese Witherspoon seems to be having a mid-life crisis in "Home Again," where she takes in three younger men to her home and apparently falls for one of them, but it seems like they all dig her, or something like that. I'm not entirely sure of the premise here, could be polygamy or something, but it just looks like something that acclaimed actors such as Witherspoon, Candice Bergen, Michael Sheen and Lake Bell should've avoided.
Mother!
September 15
Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer star in this psychological thriller from famed director Darren Aronofsky, best known for directing "Requiem For a Dream," "Pi," and "Black Swan." He not only directed the film, but wrote it as well, making it an original masterpiece from one of today's most cerebral directors. I'm wholly excited to see what direction he's taking this film in, because I really don't have a clue from the trailer. Unlike my lack of knowledge from the "Home Again" trailer above, this one really makes me excited to see it, and see what kind of trip Aronofsky will take my mind on.
American Assassin
September 15
After his girlfriend is murdered by terrorists, a CIA blackops recruit is directed to study under the watchful eye of a trained Cold War veteran. His skills are exceptional, but he needs to learn to not get personally involved, which is hard to do with a dead girlfriend and all that. Yet even his trainer has some demons, and they surface when a nuclear bomb is stolen, and they must battle an old enemy to save the world. Starring Dylan O'Brien, Michael Keaton, Sanaa Lathan and Taylor Kitsch, "American Assassin" looks to be an action-packed thrill ride with acclaimed actors and a solid script.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle
September 22
One of the surprise hits of 2014, "Kingsman: The Secret Service" blended old fashioned James Bond with stylistic, contemporary action in a way that perfected both groups and made for a fast-paced, exciting, heart-racing thrill ride. The sequel looks to be every part the original's equal, with the same Bond styling with top-notch exciting action, not to mention the combined talents of Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Mark Strong, Halle Berry, Channing Tatum and Jeff Bridges. No doubt this will be another thrilling adventure for the Kingsman, and the audience as well.
Stronger
September 22
After the bombing at the Boston Marathon, Jeff Bauman looses both his legs and must learn how to live life without them, and all the struggles, obstacles, and hindrances that stand in his way. However, it's through those tough times that he becomes a stronger person. Unlike the previous Boston Marathon bombing film "Patriots Day" (which was amazing in its own right), this one actually focuses on a real-life man and his struggle to regain some sort of normality after the life-altering event. Jake Gyllenhaal gives the performance of his career here, one that should be recognized come awards season, in a film that will more than likely require a box of tissues handy.
The LEGO Ninjago Movie
September 22
"The LEGO Movie" was a surprise success and garnered a spinoff with "The LEGO Batman Movie" earlier this year, and was also a financial and critical hit. With "The LEGO Ninjago Movie," they're taking the biggest risk yet, because the only people who really know of Ninjago are those who play with them and watch the show, whereas the other two movies had established characters from other franchises that we already knew of. Still, this looks downright hilarious like the others, a film that will undoubtedly be great for old and young alike.
Battle of the Sexes
September 22
"Battle of the Sexes" is a film starring Oscar winner Emma Stone and Oscar nominee Steve Carell and focuses on the real-life feud between tennis stars Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. In a time where women were subjugated and treated as less than equals, King rose among the ranks and became an accomplished tennis star, and Riggs made a public demand to go against her on the court. This film follows what happens before, during, and after the historic match, and looks to be a promising dramedy featuring two of today's hottest talents.
Flatliners
September 29
A remake of the beloved 1990 sci-fi psychological thriller, "Flatliners" centers around a group of medical students who want to see what lies in the great beyond, and take turns dying and being revived to share their experiences. As they keep dying, they gain different abilities, but also something deadly that stalks them. The original was a pioneer of the genre and starred heavy hitters such as Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt, while the remake stars Ellen Page (not bad, she's a very respectable actress), Diego Luna (he was great in "Rogue One"), Nina Dobrev ("The Vampire Diaries?" Alright), James Norton (who?), and Kiersey Clemons (who who?). I might be praising the original too much, but I see this as a soulless (get it?) endeavor and a needless remake, one that no one asked for.
American Made
September 29
"American Made" centers around the true-life story of Barry Seal, a former TWA pilot who was recruited by the CIA to be a drug smuggler to give information to the government. Fresh off his terrible ride in "The Mummy," Tom Cruise seeks to redeem himself here, and it looks to be a fresh, fun and thrilling true story tale, but with Cruise at the helm we really never know what to expect. Still, I'm cautiously optimistic with "American Made."
