Deadpool

Deadpool
Starring Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, Brianna Hildebrand
Directed by Tim Miller

The Story:
Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is a mercenary for hire who falls in love with prostitute Vanessa (Morena Baccarin).  Their loving - albeit unconventional - relationship takes a turn for the worse when he's diagnosed with cancer.  Given a death sentence by fate, Wilson is offered a tempting deal - his cancer will be taken care of, and he will become someone better than he was.

Under the supervision of Ajax (Ed Skrein) and Angel Dust (Gina Carano), Wade is given mutant abilities to withstand pain and regenerative abilities, but it leaves permanent scars all over him.  Now disfigured, he goes on a quest for revenge.

The Synopsis:
Back in 2009, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" hit theaters, and audiences were excited to see Deadpool hit the big screen.  Unfortunately, fans were instead given a neutered version of Deadpool, who spends most of his screen time with his mouth sewn shut.  For years fans opined for a true Deadpool movie, one that would do the comic star justice.  After years of production limbo, first time director Tim Miller decided to pick up the mantle and tackle everyone's lovable Merc with a Mouth, and the results are everything Deadpool fans desired, and then some.

In the comics, Deadpool is known for breaking the fourth wall by interacting with the readers directly.  He's also got the foulest mouth, is insanely bitterly sarcastic, and brutally massacres people.  Thankfully, all of those things are found in "Deadpool," plus more.   It's not your typical superhero movie, and it relishes in that fact.  There's no kid-friendly humor here, and if you bring kids to this movie you've got some serious parenting issues.  From start to finish, it's sexual jokes, the most vile curses, bloodbath carnage, and gratuitous sex and nudity.  In essence, it's Deadpool brought to the silver screen.

Even though the film centers around Deadpool, there's room for more than one in this party.  X-Men Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead make their own appearances in trying to convince Deadpool to join the X-Men, as well as assisting him in getting his girl back.  Colossus has been in thee previous X-Men films, but this one is the closest he's come to the comic source material.  The Negasonic Teenage Warhead was selected by Miller because he "loved her name," and changed her power to suit her name.  She is a firecracker in every sense of the word, and the two of them balance Deadpool out nicely.

On the other hand, and if there was one critique I had, it's that the villains aren't really villainous.  Ajax and Angel Dust are incredibly one-dimensional, and they seem to serve as mere henchmen for some secret major villain that we never get to see.  Maybe that's Miller's sarcastic take on your average superhero origin story, but I felt like they could've been developed better.

However, that's just one very small, minuscule critique that really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of how amazing "Deadpool" really was.  For fans of superhero comic books and movies, you'll notice several Easter Eggs in the film.  For fans of witty, sarcastic films that go far and beyond any Adam Sandler wannabe comedy, you'll find yourself rolling on the floor in laughter.  For fans of blood and gore, there's ample supply of both here.  For those with wholesome family values and who only want to see movies rated PG or less, then you better try something else.

Ryan Reynolds hasn't been the best actor, but this fits him as well as...well...that red leather suit.  His natural sarcastic charm and wit shines through here, and there's no one else out there that could've played Deadpool better.  He loved this role, and was involved in a huge viral marketing campaign for the film, one that hasn't been seen for any other film ever.  This will easily pay off as the film is set to be one of the top grossing films of the year, and it's no surprise due to its pitch-perfect direction, writing, acting, and choreography.

The Summary:
After waiting several years in anticipation for a decent Deadpool film, this one doesn't just hit it out of the park, it hit a home run with the bases loaded.

The Score: A+
