Golden Globe 2016 Predictions

Golden Globe 2016 Predictions
It's getting near to the most wonderful time of the year.  No, not Christmas, Halloween, or Jessica Alba's birthday (April 28, not that I knew that offhand), but it's almost time for Awards season.  That wonderful time of year when Hollywood's richest and most famous get together to honor Hollywood's richest and most famous.

I'm going to share my thoughts and predictions on the 2016 Golden Globe nominations...or, as I like to call it, the Oscars' red headed stepchild.

I'll begin with the television categories.

Just kidding.  I don't really care about the television categories.  Sure, there's a lot of great television out there, but once again the Globes snubbed the best show in the history of ever, of course I'm referring to The Walking Dead.  Not only did they shut out one of the highest rated shows in cable, they also snubbed two of its great actresses for the acting and/or swordfighting categories.

So let's get to the movies!

Best Foreign Film

The Brand New Testament from Belgium
The Club from Chile
The Fencer from Finland
Mustang from France
Son of Saul from Hungary

I've never heard of any of these films, but I've heard murmurs about Son of Saul, so we'll go with that.

Biggest Snub: Goodnight Mommy
What SHOULD Win: Son of Saul
What WILL Win: Son of Saul

Best Animated Feature Film
Anomalisa
The Good Dinosaur
Inside Out
The Peanuts Movie
Shaun the Sheep Movie

Like there's any real contest here.  Although I personally loved The Peanuts Movie, nothing will stop the Pixar juggernaut Inside Out...not even the lesser quality Pixar film The Good Dinosaur.

Biggest Snub: Minions
What SHOULD Win: Inside Out
What WILL Win: Inside Out

Best Screenplay
Emma Donoghue for Room
Tom McCarthy & Josh Singer for Spotlight
Charles Randolph & Adam McKay for The Big Short
Aaron Sorkin for Steve Jobs
Quentin Tarantino for The Hateful Eight

We've got five incredible films with five great screenplays, and any one of them winning would be fantastic, but I feel this will be a race between Aaron Sorkin and two-time winner Quentin Tarantino, with the edge going to Sorkin because voters love a true-life movie.

Biggest Snub: Matt Charman, Joel Coen, Eethan Coen, "Bridge of Spies"
Who SHOULD Win: Quentin Tarantino
Who WILL Win: Aaron Sorkin

Best Director
Todd Haynes for Carol
Alejandro G. Inarritu for The Revenant
Tom McCarthy for Spotlight
George Miller for Mad Max: Fury Road
Ridley Scott for The Martian

First of all, I want to thank the Globes for recognizing such an underrated masterpiece of American cinema that is Mad Max: Fury Road.  I figured an intense action film being released in the heat of the summer would've been overlooked, but thankfully that's not the case.  That being said, he has little to no chance of winning.  As much as I loved The Martian, Inarritu is the newest IT guy in Hollywood, and I can see him redeeming himself by winning the Globe after surprisingly losing last year to Richard Linklater.

Biggest Snub: Steven Spielberg, "Bridge of Spies"
Who SHOULD Win: Ridley Scott
Who WILL Win: Alejandro G. Inarritu

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role

Paul Dano for Love & Mercy
Idris Elba for Beasts of No Nation
Mark Rylance for Bridge of Spies
Michael Shannon for 99 Homes
Sylvester Stallone for Creed

For some reason, I feel this category is very lackluster.  That's not to say the actors aren't deserving or spectacular, but none of them really stick out from the rest, except for one, and that's Sylvester Stallone's return to his Oscar-nominated character, Rocky Balboa.

Biggest Snub: Michael Keaton, "Spotlight"
Who SHOULD Win: Sylvester Stallone
Who WILL Win: Sylvester Stallone

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role
Jane Fonda for Youth
Jennifer Jason Leigh for The Hateful Eight
Helen Mirren for Trumbo
Alicia Vikander for Ex Machina
Kate Winslet for Steve Jobs

Once again, I'm not too overly excited for this category.  It's very nice to see Alicia Vikander nominated for the superb Ex Machina, but not even she holds a candle to the great Kate Winslet.

Biggest Snub: Rachel McAdams, "Spotlight"
Who SHOULD Win: Alicia Vikander
Who WILL Win: Kate Winslet

Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical
Christian Bale for The Big Short
Steve Carell for The Big Short
Matt Damon for The Martian
Al Pacino for Danny Collins
Mark Ruffalo for Infinitely Polar Bear

Remember The Martian?  Remember how hilarious it was when Matt Damon was left for dead on a distant planet, alone and struggling to survive?  It's like Anchorman in space!  Wait, you mean it's NOT funny, but rather a dramatic ordeal about one man's insurmountable odds to survive?  Doesn't sound that funny.  Then again, this is the same awards show that nominated The Tourist for Best Comedy as well.  That being said, I still feel Matt Damon will win, because it seems the odds are stacked in his favor here.  Typically when two actors are nominated for the same film, their votes cancel each other out, and who's even heard of Danny Collins or Infinitely Polar Bear?

Biggest Snub: John Cusack, "Love & Mercy"
Who SHOULD Win: Steve Carell
Who WILL Win: Matt Damon

Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical
Jennifer Lawrence for Joy
Melissa McCarthy for Spy
Amy Schumer for Trainwreck
Maggie Smith for The Lady in the Van
Lily Tomlin for Grandma

This time, the Globes got it right.  Here are five actual comedies, and two of which were box office hits.  Not only that, but we got a battle of the BFFs with Lawrence and Schumer duking it out.  As much as I loved Melissa in Spy, I think the Globe will go to awards darling Lawrence.

Biggest Snub: Meryl Streep, "Ricky & The Flash"
Who SHOULD Win: Melissa McCarthy
Who WILL Win: Jennifer Lawrence

Best Actor in a Drama
Bryan Cranston for Trumbo
Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant
Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs
Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl
Will Smith for Concussion

Generally, I would be screaming: What?  No Johnny Depp?  No Tom Hanks?  What the heck?  But when you look at these five nominees, there isn't one among them that doesn't deserve it, which will make this a huge race to contend for.  While there's big buzz over DiCaprio finally ending his losing streak, I feel that the voters will go for Redmayne's portrayal of Lili Elbe, one of the first recipiants of sex reassignment surgery.  This will mark his second win in a row after his win last year as Stephen Hawking for The Theory of Everything.

Biggest Snub: Johnny Depp, "Black Mass"
Who SHOULD Win: Leonardo DiCaprio
Who WILL Win: Eddie Redmayne

Best Actress in a Drama
Cate Blanchett for Carol
Brie Larson for Room
Rooney Mara for Carol
Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn
Alicia Vikander for The Danish Girl

Cate Blanchett has been nominated for five Golden Globes and winning two of them.  Brie Larson is a newbie who delievered a compelling performance as a mother whose trapped in a room with her five year old son.  Larson's performance is bring hailed the world over, but Blanchett stars in a movie that centers on a topic the voters love...LESBIANS!
Anyway, I feel Blanchett would've been a lock if she wasn't nominated alongside her co-star Rooney Mara.  Like I said before, this tends to split the votes, so I feel Larson will deservedly walk away with the win.

Biggest Snub: Charlotte Rampling, "45 Years"
Who SHOULD Win: Brie Larson
Who WILL Win: Brie Larson

Best Motion Picture: Comedy or Musical
The Big Short
Joy
The Martian
Spy
Trainwreck

Once again, I am angered that The Martian is considered a comedy.  It's a farce and a disservice to the other four films that are actual comedies.  Although I wouldn't mind it winning, I'd much prefer the Comedy category to go to a film that was...you know...funny.  So for that, I'm betting on Amy Schumer's Trainwreck.

Biggest Snub: "Love & Mercy"
What SHOULD Win: Trainwreck
What WILL Win: Trainwreck

Best Motion Picture: Drama
Carol
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Revenant
Room
Spotlight

This category should've been expanded to ten so they could include Concussion, The Danish Girl, Steve Jobs, Bridge of Spies and Black Mass, but since there's just five it should be easy to pick.  Once again, kudos for nominating Mad Max: Fury Road, but I feel it's The Revenant's to lose.

Biggest Snub: "Steve Jobs"
What SHOULD Win: The Revenant
What WILL Win: The Revenant

So here are my picks to win the Golden Globes:
Foreign Film - Son of Saul
Animated Film - Inside Out
Screenplay - Aaron Sorkin
Director - Alejandro G. Inarritu
Supporting Actor - Sylvester Stallone
Supporting Actress - Kate Winslet
Actor in Comedy/Musical - Matt Damon
Actress in Comedy/Musical - Jennifer Lawrence
Actor in a Drama - Eddie Redmayne
Actress in a Drama - Brie Larson
Best Picture Comedy/Musical - Trainwreck
Best Picture Drama - The Revenant

We'll see if my picks were correct when the Golden Globes airs on Sunday, January 10th.
