The ABCs of Death
The ABCs of Death
"The ABCs of Death" is a twenty-six short film anthology from twenty-six horror directors, each of whom was given a particular letter of the alphabet and make a film out of it.
To properly review this film, I'll take each small film as its own:
A is for Apocalypse: A woman tries to kill her husband, but he doesn't die, while the world ends outside. A great way to start. A-
B is for Bigfoot: Adults tell a child about a Mexican Bigfoot to get her to sleep, but it becomes all too real. They don't call it Bigfoot so it's not technically "B". C+
C is for Cycle: A man finds a mysterious hole in his backyard, which has a strange power. Smart and stylish. A
D is for Dogfight: A man is involved in an underground fight club and goes against a dog that has a surprising history with him. Graphic, but a great story told without words. A
E is for Exterminate: A man kills a spider that's been observing him, and he thinks everything is alright, but finds out its not. I hate spiders. So I was really freaked out. A
F is for Fart: Japanese movies are weird. A volcano erupts unleashing killer gas, but a girl wants to die by another person's gas instead. Strange, not scary, and stupid. D
G is for Gravity: A man goes for a final surfing expedition. Boring and dull. D
H is for Hydro-Electric Diffusion: Something about cosplay furries, WW2 and strange contraptions. Unique for sure, but not at all scary. C
I is for Ingrown: A woman is held captive by a man, and through voice-overs we find out that they're more deeply connected. Smart and gruesome. A-
J is for Jidai-Geki: Once again, a strange Japanese film about a man beheading another man, who makes strange, almost comical expressions. I just don't get Japanese films. D+
K is for Klutz: A cartoon short about a woman whose stool doesn't go down the drain, but instead somewhere else. Hilarious and violent all at once. A
L is for Libido: A man is forced to go up against other men to test their libido, and the loser is killed horribly. Brutal, violent and downright unnerving. Best one of the set. A+
M is for Miscarriage: A haunting view of a real-life horror. Short, sweet and to the point, and very unnerving. A
N is fur Nuptials: A man buys a parrot to express love to his fiance, but the bird knows more than it should. More funny than scary, but a good place for it. B+
O is for Orgasm: A BDSM style film about a woman orgasm with bubbles or something. Stylish, but not at all scary. C-
P is for Pressure: A prostitute does anything she can for her family, including the unthinkable. Couldn't watch the end because of the nature of it, not scary, but just wrong. D+
Q is for Quack: A movie within a movie about the directors trying to find what to do with "Q" and decide to kill a duck, which leads to hilarious and deadly consequences. Funny and it doesn't take itself seriously. A-
R is for Removed. Strange film about removing film from a guy, he escaping and trying to push a train or something. C-
S is for Speed. A woman and her captive travel across the desert to get away from a mysterious killer, but there's more than that. Haunting and unnerving, excellent. A
T is for Toilet. Claymation film about a boy's fear of the toilet, at first it's in his head but becomes all too real. Fantastic entry, one of the best. A+
U is for Unearthed: A first-person view of a vampire being unearthed and chased. Interesting and I loved the first-person perspective. B+
V is for Vagitus: In the future, having babies is illegal, and an officer tracks down a rebel group whose housing a powerful weapon. Amazing, definitely top three, great story and surprising gore. A+
W is for WTF: A whole bunch of random stuff happens including colorful contrails in the sky, zombie clowns, a giant dinosaur and a strange flying creature. Not good at all. D
X is for XXL: An obese woman is abused and decides to make herself skinny. Something that could really happen, gory, violent and unnerving. A
Y is for Youngbuck: A mentally sick janitor loves boys, and takes one to kill a deer and do more, and the kid gets revenge. Sick, twisted, demented, and everything a horror short should be. A
Z is for Zetsumetsu: Once again, strange Japanese film about...well...not quite sure. A horrible way to end. D-
Overall Summary:
While some shorts miss the mark, there's more than enough that either exceeded expectations or met them, making for a great horror anthology.
Overall Rating: B+
