Major Theatrical Releases January 2018
2018 brings a bit of everything for everyone - action, drama, horror, family, and the conclusion of a long-awaited movie trilogy.

Here are the major theatrical releases for January 2018.

**THERE WILL BE NO SPOILERS,

since the films aren't released yet.

Also, dates are subject to change**

Molly's Game
January 5
Aaron Sorkin - best known for writing "A Few Good Men," "The Social Network," and "Moneyball" - makes his directorial debut in "Molly's Game," the true story of Molly Bloom who becomes the target of an FBI investigation for her underground poker empire she built for Hollywood celebrities, athletes, business tycoons and the mafia.  Starring the criminally underrated Jessica Chastain, the film looks to be a dramatic thriller in the guise of her other great work, "Miss Sloane."  The film also stars Idris Elba, Kevin Coster and Michael Cera.

Insidious: The Last Key
January 5
The "Insidious" franchise is quite an oddity, considering that the last two films center around a character who was hardly a main character in the first film.  Deviating from the first two, the last two films centered around Lin Shaye's Elise Rainer, a psychic who investigates hauntings.  This time, the hauntings are taking place in her childhood home, and she has to delve deeper into the Further to find the answers.  Much like the previous outings, this looks to be a terrifying thrill ride with a likeable lead character and a franchise that's made a name for itself in the horror genre.

The Post
January 12
When you get titans Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, and Tom Hanks together, you're bound to get a Oscar-bait film filled with tense drama and excitement.  "The Post" is the true-life story of The Washington Post, who published the Pentagon Papers regarding the involvement of the U.S. government during the Vietnam War, a secret that threatened the Presidency.  Meryl Streep plays Kay Graham, the Post's first female publisher, and Tom Hanks plays her editor Ben Bradlee.  Already nominated for several Golden Globes, don't be surprised to see it garnering some Oscar nominations, especially for Meryl Streep - because any movie starring Meryl Streep is bound to get a nomination.

The Commuter
January 12
Liam Neeson stars as an insurance salesman who rides the train home from work, where he meets a mysterious stranger who offers him $100,000 to identify one person on the train who doesn't belong.  His search opens up a Pandora's Box of troubles, as he finds himself in mortal danger from a shadow conspiracy that threatens himself and those on board.  Basically it's "Taken" and "Non-Stop" on a train, and Neeson is in his element here - as the most surprising action star imaginable (he is, after all, 65 years old).  The film looks exciting and thrilling, with a top-notch cast including Neeson, Vera Farmiga, and Patrick Wilson.

Proud Mary
January 12
Taraji P. Henson stars as Mary, a professional hitwoman who is the best in the business.  After a hit goes wrong, she finds herself in the care of a boy she orphaned, and works to right the wrong she committed.  Although Henson is a known superstar, the concept behind "Proud Mary" seems all too familiar (think "Atomic Blonde" for recent comparisons), and the idea of a lone female assassin has been done to death (pun intended).  Still, she might have enough charisma and star power to propel it to something better than just the ordinary flare.

Paddington 2
January 12
After the surprise success of "Paddington," it was only a matter of time before the sequel would be released.  The film reunites several of the original cast members and brings in Hugh Grant as the new antagonist to Paddington.  Here, Paddington must find the culprit who stole his present for his Aunt Lucy's 100th birthday.  The animation for Paddington is beautiful, and this will easily win the family-friendly crowd, but it's particularly not my cup of tea.

12 Strong
January 19
After the attacks on September 11, a Special Forces team is sent into Afghanistan, where the join forces with the Northern Alliance to take down a Taliban stronghold.  While they go up against a horde of enemies and heavy artillery, they enter the fray on horseback, and with the odds stacked against them, they find a way to overcome the odds.  Chris Hemsworth leads the all-star cast including Michael Shannon, Michael Pena, Geoff Stults, Thad Luckinbill, William Fichtner and Rob Riggle.

Forever My Girl
January 19
Alex Roe stars as Liam Page, a country music superstar who returns to his small town for his best friend's funeral, and runs into the girl he left at the altar.  He learns he has a young daughter, and sets out to be the father he's always wanted to be, and reconcile with his former flame.  Obviously, this type of film is not geared for my taste, and I feel this would be better suited for a Hallmark movie, but for some reason it's found its way to the mainstream, despite it's obvious script (you can tell what will happen just from the trailer), and the subpar actors leading it.

Den of Thieves
January 19
Gerard Butler stars in this gritty crime thriller that follows an elite unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department who don't usually go by the books, and a criminal syndicate who's known for robbing several banks, as they set their sights on the seemingly impossible task of robbing the Federal Reserve Bank.  Co-starring Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Pablo Schreiber, and O'Shea Jackson, this looks to be an exciting heist movie filled with spectacular gun battles.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure
January 26
The third - and final - film in the "Maze Runner" trilogy finds our heroes breaking into the Last City to rescue their friends, and finding answers to the questions they've been searching for.  The film was delayed when Dylan O'Brien suffered a severe injury on the set that incapacitated him for some time, but with this being the final film in the trilogy, it'll garner a substantial audience who read the books and wonder how it'll all come to a conclusion.

So there are the major theatrical releases for January 2018.

Here's the order as to how excited I am to see them:
1. The Post
2. Molly's Game
3. The Commuter
4. Insidious: The Last Key
5. 12 Strong
6. Maze Runner: The Death Cure
7. Proud Mary
8. Den of Thieves
9. Forever My Girl
10. Paddington 2
