Major Theatrical Releases June 2016
We're about to hit the real start of summer, when all kids are out of school, it starts getting warmer, and it begins to heat up even more at the box office.
June offers something for everyone. From romance to horror, from action to sci-fi, from comedy to family, there's a movie for every type of moviegoer this month.
Here are the major theatrical movies being released in June 2016.
June 3
Me Before You
First is the romantic tale of a small town girl who falls in love with a recently paralyzed man she's taking care of in Me Before You. Typically the summer isn't the best time for romantic movies, but it's worked in the past, such as with The Fault in Our Stars. This movie features some of today's hottest young stars including Emilia "Game of Thrones" Clarke, Sam "Hunger Games" Claflin, Jenna "Doctor Who" Coleman, and Matthew "holy crap he's that guy from Harry Potter who turned super hot" Lewis. This will be the movie your girlfriend will drag you to, but since I don't have one, this isn't necessarily one I'm dying to see.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
The other major release on June 3rd is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. The first TMNT movie wasn't a huge success, but it wasn't technically a bomb either. It warranted a sequel eventually, and we finally got it. I'm still not overly excited, as I still hate the animation of the turtles themselves, and the fact that Megan Fox is still April O'Neil. However, they did add in fan favorites Bebop and Rocksteady (and their animation doesn't look all that bad), and the welcomed addition of "Arrow" star Steven Amell as Casey Jones. Maybe these add-ons will make this sequel better than the original, but I'm not holding my breath.
June 10
WarCraft
First is the movie every gamer geek has been dying to see for years, and that's WarCraft. I'll readily admit that I've never played a minute of WarCraft, so this movie probably isn't tailored for me. Looking at these character names, I don't think I can pronounce a single one. From the imdb summary, it looks like it has something to do with orc warriors taking over a new land because theirs is dying, or something. It's got a capable cast including Paula Patton, Ben Foster and Dominic Cooper, but this isn't one that's particularly tickling my fancy, especially the lackluster effects. I feel like this will be the biggest bomb of the summer.
Next is a sequel featuring the power of magic, Now You See Me 2. Usually with a sequel there's some big cast changes. The only big difference from the original here is that Isla Fisher is out, and relative newcomer Lizzy Caplan is in. Besides her, all the other originals are back - Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Dave Franco, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Caine and the ever-amazing Morgan Freeman. This time, the Four Horsemen are recruited by a shady tech genius in Daniel "Harry Potter" Radcliffe. The first was a surprise hit, and hopefully they can re-create the cinematic magic here.
The final movie coming out June 10th is The Conjuring 2. Much like how "Now You See Me" was a surprise hit, the original "Conjuring" was a massive general and critical success. Ed and Lorraine Warren are two of the most famous paranormal investigators, and they've seen their share of weird stuff. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return to reprise their roles, as second movie takes them to north London to investigate a haunting known as the Enfield Poltergeist, which attacked two young sisters and their mother. It looks like it'll be another hit, filled with dread, suspense, and fear, and will surely be the horror movie to see this year.
June 17
First we got a sequel thirteen years in the making, Finding Dory. Disney Pixar can do no wrong (well, except for "Cars 2"), and "Finding Dory" has been a sequel everyone has been wanting since 2003's hit "Finding Nemo." This time, Nemo and Marlin set out to help their lovable forgetful blue tang fish Dory find her family, and it's obviously going to be a massive success, one that kids (and kids at heart) will by dying to see.
The other major film coming out on the 17th is Central Intelligence. Maybe I'm just burnt out of Kevin Hart, but I don't find this to be the laugh-out-loud comedy it's supposed to be. Dwayne Johnson has the chops to do pretty much anything (remember The Tooth Fairy?), but Hart's over-the-top antics are becoming tiring to me, and I don't see this being a big box office hit, especially pitted against the "Finding Dory" juggernaut.
June 24
First is another long-awaited sequel: Independence Day: Resurgence. Twenty years after the smash hit, "Resurgence" reunites most of its original cast - including Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox, Bill Pullman and Judd Hirsch - but not the main star, Will Smith. Will his absence affect the box office numbers? We'll have to wait and see. Still, it seems like this is the year of sequels being released long after the original (Zoolander 2, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, Barbershop: The Next Cut) and being box office disappointments. I don't feel "Resurgence" will be a disappointment, but I don't see it being nearly as popular as the original was back in 1996. But it still looks pretty cool.
The final movie being released this month is Free State of Jones. Generally if you're looking for Oscar bait movies, you'd have to wait for the fall. However, director Gary Ross decided to release this film in the heat of the summer, which could prove to be a detriment to an otherwise engaging story. Based on the true tale of a group of rebels who defy the Confederate army during the Civil War, the film has a strong lead in Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey, and features some great actors and sweeping landscapes, but it might be too dramatic for the summer moviegoing public.
So there are the films being released in June 2016.
Here is a list in order from what I think will be the best, to the worst.
Finding Dory
The Conjuring 2
Independence Day: Resurgence
Now You See Me 2
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
Free State of Jones
Me Before You
Central Intelligence
WarCraft
