Scary MoVie
Scary MoVie
Starring Ashley Tisdale, Simon Rex, Charlie Sheen, Snoop Dogg
Directed by Malcolm Lee
In 2000, the Wayan brothers brought to life a new look at the classic spoof movie with "Scary Movie," which grossed over $157 million dollars and was a certifiable hit. In 2001 they released the sequel, which also did very well. After the second film, however, the Wayans left the series, and the subsequent sequels slowly declined in both story and popularity, ending in 2006 with the fourth film in the franchise.
Seven years later, director Malcolm Lee (who directed "Undercover Brother" and "Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins") decided to re-ignite the franchise with "Scary Movie 5," or "Scary MoVie." Once again the Wayan brothers had nothing to do with it, and for the first time neither did Anna Faris or Regina Hall, who were both in the subsequent "Scary Movie" films.
The only actors who took part in this film from the previous films was Charlie Sheen (in a very minimized role), and Simon Rex. Former "High School Musical" star Ashley Tisdale took on the lead role, with supporting roles featuring Snoop Dogg, Darrell Hammond, Heather Locklear, Molly Shannon, Terry Crews, Katt Williams and Lindsay Lohan.
The film centered around Jody Sanders (Tisdale) and her husband Dan (Rex), who just adopted Dan's brother's (Sheen) children, a spoof off the film "Mama." As soon as the kids move in, strange occurrences begin to happen, spoofing films such as "Paranormal Activity." Other films that were spoofed included "The Black Swan," "Evil Dead," and "The Cabin in the Woods."
While trying to digest this worthless piece of film, I couldn't help but feel like I was watching some crummy high school production of something that could've been great. There wasn't a lot of laughs to be had, and the only time I did laugh was with the maid Maria (Lidia Porto), who stole every scene she was in. Without her, the film would've been a complete waste of time instead of a small waste of time. Unlike the other films that gradually decreased in value and production, this one took a complete nosedive into the gutter.
My Rating: D+
