The Friday Five: Colin Farrell

The Friday Five:
Colin Farrell
Colin Farrell has pretty much excelled in any type of film - comedy, action, horror, drama - but now he's testing his family-friendly flair with the highly-anticipated live-action version of the beloved Disney classic "Dumbo," and now I'll share my five personal favorite Colin Farrell films.

**THERE WILL BE NO SPOILERS**

#5
 The Recruit
In this political thriller, Farrell stars as James Clayton, who's recruited to the CIA by Walter Burke (played by the amazing Al Pacino) and who undergoes a series of rigorous tests to prove himself worthy of the organization.  After becoming a member of the CIA, he's tasked with eliminating a mole in the organization - who also happens to be the woman he loves.  While the script is somewhat hackneyed, Farrell brings his natural charisma and charm to the project, producing an effortless performance.

#4
 Phone Booth
Do they even have phone booths anymore?  Anyway, in this tense thriller, Farrell plays a slimy man who answers a call from a phone booth, and the man on the other end of the line threatens to kill him if he hangs up or leaves, or if he doesn't follow instructions.  Director Joel Schumacher films the movie almost entirely in one location, and Farrell delivers another strong performance, along with great actors like Kiefer Sutherland, Forest Whitaker, Radha Mitchell and Katie Holmes.

#3
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Acclaimed director Yorgos Lanthimos once again brings his own unique brand of story-telling to the big screen in "The Killing of a Sacred Deer," where Farrell plays an over-confident surgeon whose patient dies on the table, and the patient's son seeks revenge, but not in the traditional sense.  Filled with horror and dread, the film keeps you on the edge of your seat until the final shocking moments, and it's a film that gives Farrell more to work with than his typical action roles.

#2
 The Lobster
In his first collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos, Colin Farrell shines in "The Lobster," a black comedy about a world where, if you don't fall in love, you turn into an animal.  Farrell's character likes lobsters, so he says if he can't find love, he'd want to be a lobster, and the film is just insane from start to finish, something you expect from the genius mind of Lanthimos and delivered with perfect deadpan humor by Farrell - along with Rachel Weisz, Olivia Colman and John C. Reilly.

#1
 In Bruges
Sometimes it takes an Irishman to bring out the best in another Irishman.  Director Martin McDonaugh delivers "In Bruges," a brilliant offbeat humorous action film about two hit men who are tasked by their boss to hide out in Bruges, Belgium until they receive further instructions, and while one hit man finds the small town charming, the other hates it.  Farrell plays the latter, a humorous hitman who hates the town and constantly encounters run-ins with tourists, little people, and everything else he hates.  It's pure brilliance, a great blend of action and dark humor, and Farrell at his best.
