The Influencer Project

The Influencer Project
Starring Chiara King, Mike Nybroe, Luca Storm, Alexandr Willaume
Directed by Mike Nybroe

I'm very glad I'm not a teenager in today's world, where popularity is determined by how many friends and views you get on online platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Where you feel like your self worth comes from complete strangers, and nameless trolls online can severely damage your mental state. Where if you get less than one thousand followers you're seen as a failure, and your whole world revolves around what you film with your phone as opposed to seeing the world for what it is. Chiara King is a real-life "influencer" who's been gifted with trips, gifts, and cash due to her high following, but it also has a dark side as well - in real life, she endured a stalker, and now "The Influencer Project" looks at a fictionalized version of those events with King playing a fictionalized version of herself. While this could be the chance to expose influencers for the harm they cause, it instead is a lame, repetitive, by-the-book jump scare ridden snoozefest with way too many endings and twists they surely thought would be shocking but instead turned out groan-inducing.

Chiara King (Chiara King) is a huge social media influencer with millions of followers, and due to her popularity she's gifted with an all-expense paid trip to Copenhagen, Denmark, to do some videos for her Instagram and TikTok followers. She's followed by a film crew who's making a movie based on her success, but during the time there she finds a stalker online known as king_slayer_xx99 who not only threatens her, but proves he's close by posting pictures of her and the filming crew. Things escalate as Chiara tries to find out the man's identity and stop him before he follows through on his deadly threats.

Social media has been a huge drawback to countless teens in today's world, where your worth is determined by your following count, and trolls can lead you to commit certain acts that no one should ever think about. The movie's opening is the film's strongest, with a young girl struggling to gain a following of her own doing something unspeakable to be famous. We're so focused now on influencers and being famous that we forget what living is all about, and instead find our worth by others, and see the world not through our eyes but through our phone lens. It's superficial, artificial and incredibly dangerous, and "The Influencer Project" actually exemplifies those negative qualities.

That's because Chiara King isn't really a good person. She's more about being famous than being real, and enjoys all the perks of being a mighty social media influencer. She gets lavish gifts, tons of cash, and more fame and popularity than anyone who does what she does deserves. She even gets a free trip to Copenhagen, and all she has to do is post ten stories about the town. She's a celebrity of the D-list variety, but acts like she's an Oscar-winning actress. Obviously this is her character in the movie and I'm sure she's a lovely person in the real world, but here she comes across as the ultimate paper tiger - all glare, no substance.

Here she comes across as a whiny, entitled brat who, when she finds she's gained a stalker, devolves into a screaming, crying mess for most of the film. She has no strength of her own and comes across as the most hapless victim, but somehow still tries to show strength in the face of her overwhelming weakness. There's countless cheap jump scares to keep the audiences' attention, but not even those moments led to a single moment of actual horror. The only horrifying thing in this movie is her acting. And the ending. There's a twist that's thrown in that's painfully obvious, and just when you think the movie is done, there's another twist and another ending. Then, when you think the movie is finally done, there's another twist and another ending. After the first fake ending I wanted it to just end entirely, but they forced me to sit through the "Return of the King" style multiple endings, but done in a highly stupid, vapid way - much like the whole movie.
