Continuing my anime adventures with watching movies based on long-running franchises I've never seen, my buddy and I saw "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Tears of the Azure Sea." I've heard of the title before and wondered what it was about, and on the ride there I got a crash course on the first four seasons - a man is murdered and is reincarnated in another world as a slime with the ability to absorb the powers and appearances of other beings, in a nutshell. Fortunately, I didn't need a lot of background information for this movie, as the tale itself is one as old as cinema itself, brought to vivid life with astonishing animation, intense action, and compelling performances.

Heading on vacation from an invite from Elmesia El-Ru Sarion, Rimuru Tempest (Miho Okasaki) and his companions plan for some rest, relaxation, food, drink and fun. However, not long after arriving on the island, they meet the ocean princess Yura (Saoiri Onishi) who is on the run after stealing the flute that summons their Great Water Dragon that Djeese (Koji Yusa) and Zodon (Koichi Domoto) want to use to take over the world. With the help of Rimuru and his crew, especially goblin Gobta (Asuna Tomari) - who's taken a shine to Yura - they set out to prevent Djeese and Zodon from completing their evil task.

Unlike other films I've seen based on anime shows, it didn't take me long to catch up with what was happening here, as I said earlier the core story is very generic: a princess needs help to prevent evil rulers from using their dragon to take over the world, and falls in love with one of the group's people. It's a great blend of love and action, with a twist of comedy, and there wasn't a time where I was really lost in what was happening.

It doesn't hurt that anime has some of the most beautiful animation in any genre, and this is no exception. When it comes to the action, I was in awe of what I was seeing, and during the story I was equally enthralled in the visuals. My buddy really liked it, and is a big fan of the show, so for those people this movie provides everything you want - and for me, as someone who's never seen an episode, it's a beautiful film that doesn't rely too much on its past and gives you enough information to understand what's happening. Also known as: the best of both worlds.

The Score: A
